Golinello Earns a Win at Barber; Testing Tires for 2011
LEEDS, Ala.--Richard Golinello covered all the bases at Barber Motorsports Park last weekend, coming away from the PBOC event with finishes of first, second and third.
After wrapping up the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge in September, Golinello determined to get as much track time as possible during the off-season. He returned to his PBOC Motorsports Club roots this past weekend, racing his No. 55 R&C Motorsports Ford Mustang FR500S.
Golinello's first competition of the weekend was an enduro on Saturday. A lengthy pit stop for new tires set him back early in the race, but he powered back to take third place in the R2 class.
On Sunday, Golinello started the day with a second-place finish. Halfway through the race, he was hit by a competitor, which resulted in a spin. Not one to give up easily, though, Golinello continued the chase to earn his second podium of the weekend.
"I was battling and the other car left it wide open in turn 14A, so I took the opportunity to pass," says Golinello. "He came down into me and I spun. I got right back on the track and started to make up time."
The third and final race of the weekend was much less dramatic, but much more satisfying: Golinello took the R2 lead early and held on until the checkered flag.
"Right from the start I was really aggressive. I had a great grid position, and once I passed the Porsche that had been leading our class, I never looked back. I wound up racing with a BMW from another class, and we had a lot of fun together," says Golinello.
All of this off-season racing is a chance for Golinello to prepare for the 2011 SCCA Pro Racing World Challenge season. Golinello will be racing on Pirelli tires in the series, so he is already testing compounds and adjusting the setup of his Mustang.
Golinello says, "We made some setup changes, but there are more to come. We're going to go out later this season to work on some spring changes and further setup adjustments. The Pirellis are definitely faster, so we know we'll be able to drop our lap times when the car is set up properly for them."
In the meantime, Golinello heads home to Tampa, Florida, with two podiums and a win. He calls the victory a confidence booster, but won't be resting on his laurels for long. He'll be back on track next month for more off-season testing--and winning.
