RealTime Acuras to Defend SPEED Touring Car Titles
All Five of Team's Drivers Return
SAUKVILLE, Wis. (Jan. 23, 2006) - With RealTime Racing's ninth SCCA Pro Racing World Challenge Drivers' and Manufacturers' Championship trophies secured in its trophy case, the SPEED Touring Car team looks to the start of the 2006 season with all of its drivers from last year returning to the Acura squad.
"As the 2005 championship approached its conclusion, the five of us discussed the possibility of continuing as a group," said RealTime leader Peter Cunningham. "For a while it didn't seem likely, but everything worked out, so I am thrilled to return and defend our titles with this strong group intact!"
Cunningham and Pierre Kleinubing have won seven of the team's individual driver championships. They will again race the Acura TSX models, as will 2005 Rookie of the Year Brandon Davis. 2005 Denver race winner Eric Curran and third-year RTR pilot Nick Esayian will drive the team's Acura RSX cars.
RealTime Team Manager Nathan Bonneau sized up the competition, "We know that our two toughest competitors--Mazda and BMW--will be back with a vengeance, and we're hearing Audi, Mercedes and Volvo will be stepping up as well. Between our winter development program and the same great driver line up, we're eagerly anticipating the start of the new season."
The 2006 Championship again opens March 17 at Sebring, where both Cunningham and Kleinubing are two-time winners in World Challenge competition.
During the course of the 10-event season, the World Challenge will share the billing with IMSA's American Le Mans series on seven occasions, and once each for the Indy Racing League, ChampCar, and NASCAR Nextel Cup.
Cunningham won the 2005 Drivers' Championship through consistency; winning one race, earning six other podium finishes and never finishing outside the top-10. The depth of talent on the Acura team was formidable, with Kleinubing, Davis and Curran all placed in the top-five for the season while Esayian was 12th. The strength of the performances from these drivers and the RealTime crew gave Acura its record-tying fifth Manufacturers' Championship.
The RealTime Acura team is sponsored by Acura, Red Line Oil, Eibach Springs, buyBrakes.com, Sparco, Hawk Performance, Brembo, A-SPEC, SportCompactCar, BOSCH, Memphis Car Audio, Valley Graphix, Total Auto Body, PACT and A-YES.
