FORMER LEMANS WINNER PILOTS PIRATE RACING TO VICTORY LANE
HARTLAND PARK RACEWAY, TOPEKA, KS -- First-year World Challenge Series team, Pirate Racing of Palm Desert, CA, claimed its first victory in the SCCA Pro Racing World Challenge Series inaugural Round 1 race held here on May 16.
Bill Cooper, former LeMan's winner, Challenge Series veteran, and current senior instructor for the Bob Bondurant Driving School, drove Pirate Racing's #76 in the T1 class and dominated the field from his pole position start - leading the #2 finishing Saleen Mustang at one point by 38 seconds. "We ran strong all from practice through qualifying and throughout the entire race" said Cooper. "This Les Stanford Chevrolet/Pirate Racing Team has what it takes to be very successful this season and and I am very pleased to be part of their program."
Scotty B. White, driving the #75 Pirate Car from the 4th qualifying position, ran a strong first race with the new Pirate ZR-1 Car until #75 had an unfortunate encounter with lapped traffic. Running in a solid 3rd place until that point, this accident severely bent the right rear tie rod on #75 and causing White to finish 13th in Class and 30th overall.
The winning Pirate car, sponsored by Lund Truck Accessories and Les Stanford Chevrolet (Dearborn, MI), ran both the qualifying and race laps flawlessly under the skilled hands of Cooper and with the Doug Rippie Motorsports chassis and engine combination.
The World Challenge is a racing showcase of sports cars, touring GTs and sport coupes -- race-prepared and performance-enhanced versions of the same cars you see on the street every day. The Touring 1 Class (T1) features V8 Ford Mustangs, Chevrolet Camaros and Corvettes, and Pontiac Firebirds as well as V10 Dodge Vipers pitted against high-tech BMW M-5s, Mazda RX-7s and Acura's NSX.
Pirate Racing will seek their 2nd victory in Round #2 of the World Challenge Series on May 23 at Lime Rock Park in Lime Rock, CT.
