Fitzgerald gives Lexus first-ever Speed Touring Car Pole
CANADA (May 17, 2003) -- Mike Fitzgerald, of Phoenix, Ariz., gave the Lexus IS 300 its first-ever pole position in SCCA Pro Racing Speed Touring Car competition today, and will lead the field in this afternoon's race at Mosport International Raceway, the featured event Saturday at the "Ontario More To Discover" Victoria Day Weekend. Jeff Altenburg, of Ellicott City, Md., and Brazilian Pierre Kleinubing completed the top three, which were separated by just 0.030-second.
Driving the No. 81 Team FBR/Trans Sport Lexus IS 300, Fitzgerald turned a record 1:33.432 (94.747 mph) on his last lap to steal the position away from Altenburg's No. 40 TriPoint/Mazdaspeed Mazda Protege ES and Kleinubing's No. 42 RealTime Racing Acura RSX-S.
"We're excited to finally produce something for Lexus and TRD [Toyota Racing Development]," said Fitzgerald, who scored several podium finishes in the developmental 2002 season, but no poles or race wins. "This team has been working very hard and they do a great job in every aspect. The Lexus is very good here--fast corners and coming out of slow ones are strengths for the car."
The top spot changed throughout the 20-minute session, with Fitzgerald, Altenburg and Sebring Round One racewinner Bill Auberlen trading the top spot. Fitzgerald's fastest lap eclipsed Will Turner's 2002 mark of 1:34.581 (93.595 mph). Turner was fourth in his BMW 325i, followed by Matt Plumb in a BMW 325i.
Today's SCCA Speed Touring Car Championship Round Two race will make its standing start at 1:25 p.m.
