Kleinubing Paces SCCA SPEED Touring Car Practice At Mosport

CANADA (Aug. 6, 2004) - Brazilian Pierre Kleinubing was fastest in Friday's SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge Touring Car practice at Mosport International Raceway, in preparation for Sunday's Toronto Grand Prix of Mosport Round Seven race. Peter Cunningham, of West Bend, Wis. was second quickest, while Memo Gidley, of Navato, Calif., was third.

Under cloudy skies with temperatures in the low 60s, Kleinubing turned a fast lap of 1:30.535 (97.778 mph) in his No. 42 A-SPEC/RealTime Racing Acura TSX during the morning practice session. The three-time series Champion feels very comfortable at Mosport, as he is gunning for a record fifth-career win at the 2.459-mile circuit.

"The car is really good and I like this place," Kleinubing said of his quick lap time. "This track has been really kind to me over the years. We chose to run our qualifying setup in both sessions today. But, today doesn't count. We'll see tomorrow. We should have a pretty good car for qualifying."

Kleinubing's fast time is more than three seconds quicker than the current qualifying track record of 1:33.705 (94.746 mph), which was set last year by Mike Fitzgerald in a Lexus IS300

Driving the No. 4 NISMO/TeamRTR Nissan Sentra SE-R, Cunningham turned the second-fastest lap of the day with a 1:30.962 (97.524 mph). This weekend, Cunningham looks to record his fourth-career win at Mosport.

After pulling off a successful double weekend in which he competed in the SPEED Touring Car race at Portland and the Champ Car race in Vacouver two weeks ago, Gidley powered his No. 48 U.S. Air Force Reserve Ford Focus to the third fastest time of the day with a 1:31.081 (97.192 mph).

Sweden's Nic Jonsson, who is carrying 250 lbs of REWARDS weight, was fourth quickest in his BMW 325Ci. Matt Plumb, of Newport, R.I., set the fifth fast lap time in his Acura TSX.

SPEED Touring Car qualifying is set for 11:30 a.m. (EDT) Saturday, Aug. 7. The SPEED Touring Car Round Seven race will make its standing start at 9:55 a.m. (EDT) Sunday, Aug. 8. Sunday's race will air at 12:00 p.m. (EDT), Sunday Aug. 15.
