ESPENLAUB FASTEST IN SPEED TOURING CAR MOSPORT PRACTICE
CANADA (Sept. 2, 2005) -- Charles Espenlaub made the most out of picture-perfect weather Friday afternoon to set the fastest time in practice for Sunday's SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge Touring Car Round 10 race at Mosport International Raceway in Bowmanville, Ontario. Pierre Kleinubing and Brandon Davis completed the top three.
Driving the No. 97 Sparco/Oakley/Tindol Motorsports Mazda 6, Espenlaub benefited from a draft from another competitor to set a fast lap of 1:30.459 (97.861 mph) in the second of two sessions.
"The guys worked really hard on the car and it was fast the moment it hit the track," Espenlaub said. "But that particular lap, I got a really good tow from Chip [Herr] in the Ford Focus. That thing must be like a barn in the air and gave me a really good tow. I just looked [at the data] and it was a six mile-per-hour difference.
"I learned how to drive at Road Atlanta, and Mosport is like Atlanta times 10. I like it."
Kleinubing led a trio of A-SPEC/RealTime Racing Acura TSXs in the next three spots with a fast time of 1:30.503 (97.813 mph), just a tick off fast time of the day. Brandon Davis, who already clinched The Winning Team Racing Apparel Rookie of the Year honors at Denver, was third, just 0.053-second behind, followed by point leader Peter Cunningham another tenth behind him.
Michael Galati was fifth on the day in his No. 02 Autohaus Motorsport/Molyshield Oil Mercedes C230 Coupe, after turning the morning's second-quickest time of 1:30.825 (97.466 mph).
Qualifying for Sunday's Round 10 race is scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. (EDT). Live Timing and Scoring can be viewed at www.world-challenge.com. Sunday's race is scheduled to start at 11:15 a.m.
