Fellows Tops Damp SPEED GT Qualifying at Mosport
CANADA (Sept. 2, 2006) Defending Mosport champion Ron Fellows, of Mississuaga, Ont., timed the weather perfectly to score his second-career pole at Mosport this afternoon in the closing laps of SCCA Pro Racing SPEED GT qualifying. Series teamate Andy Pilgrim, of Boca Raton, Fla., was second, followed by Leighton Reese of Minnetonka, Minn.
The rain was imminent as the SPEED GT cars took the grid, and a light sprinkle descended as the field started their first flying laps. Driving the No. 16 XM/Mobil 1/Motorola/OnStar/Cadillac CTS-V, Fellows put his first flying lap at the top of the time sheets and that's where it stayed as track conditions worsened.
"With the rain coming, I figured I'd have to do it in the first lap," said Fellows. "I had some traffic on the lap, but I couldn't waste any time. I knew I needed to get a good time while it was still semi-dry."
As the track went from semi-dry to full-wet and times slowed, many teams opted to pull their cars into the pits, at times leaving less than five cars out on the track. The handful of dry laps that opened the session ended up being the only ones with the rain slowing only as the checkered flag flew.
Fellows's time of a 1:25.498 (103.539 mph) was just slightly quicker than that of teammate Andy Pilgrim. The No. 1 XM/Mobil 1/Motorola/OnStar/Cadillac CTS-V clocked a time of 1:25.522 (103.510 mph), good enough for second spot on the grid and earning him four points in the Championship, putting him only one point behind Lou Gigliotti heading into the race.
Last year's Mosport pole winner, the No. 6 Banner Engineering Chevrolet Corvette C6 of Leighton Reese, completed the top three with a 1:25.976 (102.963 mph). The No. 13 Woodhouse Auto Family Dodge Viper of Bob Woodhouse (1:26.034) and the No. 24 At Speed Motorsports Volvo S60R of Michael Galati (1:26.233) finish out the top five.
Brett Pearson (Dodge Viper), Ricardo Imery (Porsche 911 GT3), Tommy Archer (Dodge Viper), points leader Lawson Aschenbach (Porsche 911 GT3) and Rob Foster (Dodge Viper) complete the top ten.
Today's SPEED World Challenge GT race is schedule for 5:15 p.m. (EDT). The rain is expected to continue for the rest of the day and will certainly be a factor for the GT cars around the fast, rolling curves Mosport International Raceway.
