Pobst and Galati say let it rain for Round 9 of SCCA SPEED GT in New
Pobst admits to thinking championship for himself and Porsche
Millville, New Jersey (September 25, 2008): The weather report for this weekend in Southern New Jersey calls for rain followed by more rain as a tropical storm slides northward along the Atlantic coast. Given that the K-PAX/3R Racing Team is facing a wet outlook for Round 9 of the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge GT Championships at Thunderbolt Raceway.
So why are Randy Pobst and Michael Galati smiling?
Pobst and Galati have both won a few rainy World Challenge races in recent years and both K-PAX Porsche drivers feel that a wet track will help their chances in New Jersey.
"I would love to see a rain race, most definitely," said Michael Galati who has won World Challenge races in both GT and Touring Car in recent years. "As long as we can keep the windshields from fogging up we are good to go."
During the Thursday test day at Thunderbolt Raceway Randy Pobst, of Gainesville Georgia, looked at the increasing rain and said," it isn't wet enough yet to really learn anything!"
Randy comes to southern New Jersey with a sizable 116 point lead (827 to 711) over Andy Pilgrim and he admits to be scoreboard watching a bit particularly on a damp track.
"When I see rain drops splashing against my windshield as I am shifting into 5th gear and about to head into a fast sweeping turn, you're darned right I start thinking about the championship," said Pobst. "If this was race day I would push it but not on a test day!"
Pobst freely admitted that the word for this weekend was conservative because with the final race only 8 days away a bad mistake this weekend could still lose Pobst the championships the K-PAX Team has worked for all season.
"For the next two races I am going to be like an insurance adjuster and analyze every more in terms of risk," said Pobst.
"The key for me this weekend is qualifying because I don't want to be starting 13th and get caught up in a mess. My race engineer Will Moody and I are going to concentrate on setting up our #1 Porsche for qualifying and try to qualify as well as possible, just like we did in Detroit.
"If I can start up near the front I will be more comfortable and then we can see where the race takes us."
Michael Galati is fighting a stomach bug that is making the Olmstead Ohio driver feeling queasy which coupled with track dampening rains have limited his track time in the #23 K-PAX/3R Racing Porsche 911 GT3.
"I'm feeling a little off right now but I am really looking forward to racing on this track," said Galati. "The K-PAX team has never been here so it will be interesting to see how we do. But Thunderbolt Raceway is new for everybody so we are all starting out pretty much even."
Galati is 3rd in the Drivers' Championship with 621.
The K-PAX Porsches of Pobst and Galati have pushed Porsche into the lead for the Manufacturers' Championship Presented by Racer Magazine as Porsche leads with 53 points with Cadillac and Dodge trailing with 39 and 36.
"We can't get so conservative that we don't keep Porsche in the lead for the championship," said Pobst. "Winning for Porsche is just as important for me and the team as winning the drivers' title is."
Pobst and Galati will qualify their K-PAX/3R Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars on Friday September 245h 2008 at 2:15 pm and Round 9 of the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge GT Championship at the new Thunderbolt Raceway in Millville New Jersey will take their standing start at 1:00 pm Eastern Time on Saturday September 27th.
The race can be seen on SPEED TV on Wednesday October 8th at 12:00 pm Eastern Time.
