Will Turner wins at Mid-Ohio.
LEXINGTON, Ohio (June 30, 2002). After what seems like endless development on the new E46 BMW 325i racecars, Turner Motorsport gives Team Owner/Driver Will Turner a flawless car and he rewards them by with a spray of champagne this afternoon at The Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. It is Turner's third career victory since joining the SPEED World Challenge Touring Car Circuit in 1998-- his first since 1999.
"All I can say is FINALLY," Turner commented."We really have been working on the development of this new car for a while so I am glad that we got a win. The real reason for this win is preparation. The guys gave me the most phenomenal handling car. It would do whatever I wanted it to do, whenever I wanted."
Starting second, Turner never removed himself from the rear view mirror of the pole sitter-- Paul Lambert in his Audi A4 Quattro. Just as the pair was pulling away from the rest of the charging pack, contact between two other cars brought out the day's first full-course caution. On the restart, Turner and Lambert battled heavily for the lead and Taz Harvey took advantage and passed both cars for the lead with Turner close in tow. A slight bump sent Lambert off course leaving Turner with only one concern-- passing Harvey.
On lap 18, mission accomplished. Tuner had been closing on Harvey for a few laps when he executed a beautiful pass entering into the"key hole" section of the famed Mid-West road course and never looked back. Even during another full-course caution, Turner talked on the radio to his teammates and crew to alert them of various track conditions. Frank Selldorff finished the day and Bobby Sak
The Speed World Challenge Touring Division is among today's most popular road racing. Competition between various makes of cars all on the same track at the same time is intense. More than 60 cars were entered in this weekend's event-- round #4 of 11-- from brands including BMW, Audi, Honda, Acura, Honda, Nissan, Volkswagen and Mercury. With that many cars all racing for the top spot, traffic was very heavy and at times tough to negotiate.
This weekend's SPEED World Challenge Touring Car event from The famed Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course will be broadcast on The SPEED Channel (formerly Speedvision) on Saturday, July 13 at 9 PM Eastern.
