K-PAX/3R Racing Porsches come to Mid-Ohio looking for three in a row
K-PAX/3R Racing Porsche drivers Randy Pobst and Michael Galati head to Mid-Ohio International Raceway in Lexington Ohio looking to continue their hot streak in Sunday's Round 7 of the SCCA SPEED World Challenge GT Championship Series.
Randy Pobst on the strength of two straight wins comes in with the lead in the GT Driver's Championship while the K-PAX Porsches have closed the gap on Cadillac in the manufacturer's title as well.
Michael Galati and Randy Pobst will have the number three on their minds here at Mid-Ohio this weekend. Michael is looking for 3's at Mid-Ohio this year as he is looking to win his 3rd Mid-Ohio GT race and the 3rd straight for the K-PAX/3R Racing Porsches!
While Randy Pobst has yet to win at Mid-Ohio he has 3 on his mind as he will be trying to do a K-PAX Porsche three-peat of his own winning three straight in his #22 Porsche while trying to win his 3rd Touring Car race of the season in his MazdaSpeed Motorsports Development Mazda 6.
"Both of our driver's have a lot of experience on this track and that should help us," said Bob Raub of 3R Racing. "Experience was a huge factor in our win at Toronto and the rain had a little to do with it too. Toronto was the first race where having both of or drivers racing in both classes actually helped us because track time was so limited."
If Pobst is going to win he will have to do it with an added 50 pounds of adjustment weight added to the Porsche 997 and with 100 pounds of REWARDS lead added on the heels of two straight GT wins at Watkins Glen and Toronto.
"The other cars kill us under acceleration and down the straights but we won two straight races so I think that SCCA felt that they had to make an adjustment," said Raub. "We don't like getting competition adjustments go against us, no one does, but it what it is and we aren't going lay down I can promise you that!"
"We should be good to go at Mid-Ohio," said Galati. "We did some testing recently and we solved the minor braking problem we had so I'm pretty pumped up for this race!"
Olmstead Ohio resident Michael Galati considers Mid-Ohio his home track but to hear him talk about it the local knowledge thing is no big deal in the World Challenge Series!
"At this level there is no such thing as home track advantage," Galati said. "The drivers and teams are at a level where they pick things up pretty quickly so usually it only takes one or two visits to figure a track out. Besides there are plenty of guys in this series who have probably had more laps around Mid-Ohio than I do!"
Michael indicted that racing in front of friends and family isn't all that much of a motivator either.
"Sure you want to do well in front of your family but once you get in the car it is all business as usual. To do well in this series you have to go 100 percent all the time no matter where you are racing and who is watching!"
"Mid-Ohio is a very beautiful race track but it is very demanding at the same time," said Galati who finished 3rd in GT here at Mid-Ohio driving the K-PAX Volvo S-60R. "The track has slow turns, fast turns, and technically demanding turns. It has everything. But what makes Mid-Ohio really tough is that you are turning the car almost all the time. The only really straight part of the track is the little pit straight! Even the main straight has a kink in it! Every place has a little bend to it which makes it a great driver's track."
Round 7 of SCCA Pro Racing's SPEED World Challenge GT Championships is set to go green at 5:05 PM EDT on Sunday July 22nd. Qualifying for the race will be on Saturday.
K-PAX/3R Racing Mid-Ohio Pre-Race information
Michael Galati and Randy Pobst finished 1-2 in the 2004 Mid-Ohio World Challenge GT race in Audi RS6s. Galati won the 2002 GT race at Mid-Ohio also driving an Audi while Randy Pobst finished 3rd driving a 3R Racing Porsche. Interestingly that would be Randy's worst finish of that season with 4 wins and 2 second place finishes in his 7 starts in the 3R Porsche that year.
Michael Galati is the only driver to win World Challenge races in both GT and Touring Car at Mid-Ohio having won TC in an Acura Integra on his way to winning the TC driver's title in 1999. Galati has won the GT driver's title twice in 2001 and 2002 and Touring Car (or T2 as it was previously known) championships in 1996, 1998 and 1999.
Randy Pobst won the 2003 GT championship and is looking to add to that total this year as he leads both the GT and Touring Car driver's championships.
