AUBERLEN RETURNS TO PACE SPEED TOURING CAR LIME ROCK PRACTICE
LAKEVILLE, Conn. (July 1, 2005) -- Defending SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge Touring Car Champion Bill Auberlen, of Rolling Hills Estates, Calif., wasted no time getting back up to speed after missing the last four rounds, pacing practice Friday in preparation for Saturday's Round Six race, part of the New England Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park.
Driving the No. 1 Turner Motorsport/H&R Springs BMW 325i, Auberlen turned a fastest lap of 58.349 seconds (95.014 mph), just edging Pierre Kleinubing's No. 43 A-SPEC/RealTime Racing Acura TSX by 0.002-second. Both drivers have four career wins at Lime Rock and would set a series record for most wins at a venue with a fifth.
Additionally, Kleinubing is seeking his fourth-straight win in 2005, which would tie the current mark held by David Murry, Terry Borcheller and Michael Galati.
Local ace Eric Curran, of South Deerfield, Mass., was third quickest in combined practice after leading the first session. Curran (No. 45 A-SPEC/RealTime Racing Acura RSX) ran a 0:58.411 (94.914 mph) in the second session--his best on the day. SPEED Touring Car point leader Peter Cunningham was fourth quick with a 0:58.470 (94.818 mph) in his No. 42 A-SPEC/RealTime Racing Acura TSX, followed by the No. 73 Mazdaspeed/Tri-Point Motorsports Mazda 6 of Randy Pobst (0:58.752, 93.750 mph).
Qualifying for Saturday's race is scheduled for Friday afternoon at 3:50 p.m. (EDT). Live timing and scoring can be accessed via www.world-challenge.com.
Saturday's race will be broadcast Sunday, July 3 at 4:00 p.m. (EDT).
