LAKEVILLE, Conn. (May 23, 2003) - Bill Auberlen, of Hermosa Beach, Calif., paced both sessions of the SCCA Pro Racing Speed World Challenge Championships, racing at Lime Rock Park, in Lakeville, Conn., part of the Mohegan Sun Presents The Lime Rock Park Grand Prix.
Driving the No. 7 BMW Team PTG M3 in SCCA Speed GT, Auberlen turned a fastest lap of 55.009 seconds (100.129 mph) around the 1.53-mile circuit in the second, and only dry, session of the day. The lap was the fastest ever run by an SCCA Speed World Challenge car around the circuit, eclipsing the previous record for a car on "R" compound tires of 56.638 seconds (97.252 mph).
Auberlen's teammate Boris Said, of Carlsbad, Calif., was second fastest with a lap of 55.243 seconds (99.705 mph). Point leader Phil McClure was third quickest in the No. 73 Aggregate Industries/3R Racing Chevrolet Corvette ZO6, followed by John Young's Saleen SR 351 and Hans Stuck's BMW M3.
"It was a tough session, because we made a lot of changes prior to and during the session that ended up making us quickest," said Auberlen. "We still have a lot of work to do before Saturday's qualifying session."
In SCCA Speed Touring Car, Auberlen wheeled the No. 93 Turner Motorsport/H&R Springs/BMW-Watertown BMW 325i to a lap of 1:00.647 (90.820 mph), also better than the existing track record.
"It's difficult to make the transition between the GT car and the Touring Car, so it took me several laps to get the car up to speed," said Auberlen of the Speed Touring Car session. "The Turner Motorsport team did an excellent job getting the car ready. The series is so competitive that it takes a lot of work to be prepared for each race."
Pierre Kleinubing, who edged Auberlen last week at Mosport International Raceway's Round Two, was second fastest in his No. 42 RealTime Racing Acura RSX-S. Auberlen's teammate and team owner Will Turner was third in his BMW, followed by defending series Champion Peter Cunningham's Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V and Jeff Altenburg's Mazda Protege.
Qualifying for the SCCA Speed World Challenge is set for Saturday morning, with the SCCA Speed GT running the first of two races Saturday afternoon. The second Speed GT race of the weekend is set for Monday, along with the sole SCCA Speed Touring Car Round.
