LG Motorsports Announces Three Corvette C6 Line-Up For 2006 SPEED World Challenge GT
Team Looks To Build On 2005 Momentum
Detroit -- March 5, 2006 LG Motorsports announced today they will increase their commitment to the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge GT Series with a three-car effort. Known for getting tremendous horsepower from their LG Pro Long Tube Corvettes, the LG Motorsports team expects to pick-up right were they left off in 2005.
In addition to the three-time former World Challenge Champion, Lou Gigilotti, in his #28 black and yellow flamed LG Motorsports Corvette C6, the team will also campaign the #26 Corvette with former Trans-Am Series stand-out, Claudio Burton and Doug Petersen in the #87 3-Dimensioal Services Corvette.
"I'm really looking forward to competing in a World Challenge GT car," commented Claudio Burton. "I've heard all the commentary referring to the GT class being a modern day Trans-Am, so I think it will be a good fit with my background."
"We just had a test session this past Friday," Burton added. "It's a great feeling car and very responsive. We're certainly not lacking for horsepower. The LG Motorsports guys really have the car figured out. I think it will be a pretty quick learning curve for me moving into the Series. At least I've got a great team behind me to help."
2000 Star Mazda Series Masters Champion, Doug Petersen, comes to the SPEED World Challenge Series after competing in 2005 with the American Speed Factory team in the extremely competitive Star Mazda Series. He finished third in the Masters Series Championship while accumulating and impressive 12 top-ten finishes, nine top-fives and visited the podium five times with one third-place finish and four wins.
"I've wanted to drive one of Lou's cars for quite sometime," said Doug. "I came down and tested a couple of weeks back and I'm really impressed with the car. If I had to use one word, it would be 'wow!' Obviously, it's a bigger car than I'm used to, but I was very surprised by the response and handling."
"I'm really looking forward to participating in the SPEED World Challenge Series," Doug continued. "One good thing is the schedule-- I know my way around most of the tracks we'll visit, with the exception of Utah. Then again, no one has been there yet, so I'll be on equal footing for that one. I think with Lou's help and knowledge of the Series, we'll come up to speed pretty quick and hopefully start making our way to the front."
"Campaigning a three-car team will be a great opportunity to showcase the LG Motorsports team and LG Motorsports' products," said team owner, Lou Gigliotti. "We're a little bit old school in our approach to racing," he added. "We race what we sell-- so for us it is still a matter of win on Sunday, sell on Monday. Our customers have come to know us for our quality and high performance products. To us, if we can't win with it, we don't sell it. Our customers know that. It's a simple formula-- at LG Motorsports, we race what we sell."
So far, the LG Motorsports' formula has worked well for Lou. With Championship titles 1991,1992 and 1996, Gigliiotti returned to the World Challenge Series in 2004 and racked up 3 top-five and 5 top-ten finishes while taking the third step on the podium at Mosport and Road Atlanta.
In 2005, the former champion finished the ninth place in the Championship while only running a partial season. Lou put the #28 LG Motorsports Pro Long Tube Header Corvette on the pole at Lime Rock Park and again at Infineon Raceway. He went on to win the race at Infineon with a dominating wire-to-wire run.
Two weeks later, at Portland International Raceway, Gigliotti put SPEED World Challenge Touring Car driver Dino Crescentini in the #28 car. Dino went on to earn his first World Challenge victory while securing back-to-back wins for the #28 car in the process.
Gigliotti's 2005 season finished with two Top Qualifier awards, four top-five finishes, five top-tens, third place at St. Petersburg, a win at Infineon and second place at Mosport. Toss in Crescentini's win at Portland and it all spells a winning pedigree for the #28 LG Motorsports Corvette.
Fans can come out and support LG Motorsports new three car effort at the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge Series events which get underway March 15, at the historic Sebring International Raceway as part of the Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring, in Florida. The events will air tape-delayed on Sunday, March 19th at 3pm (Touring Car) and 4pm (GT) on SPEED Channel.
