Lap of Lime Rock Park with Phil McClure
Lime Rock, Conn. -- Phil McClure, driver of the number 73 Aggregate Industries/Corvette Z06, has had mixed results at Lime Rock in the past. Two years ago he put his Corvette on its top just before the bridge and last year was able to finish a strong fourth and sixth in the two races run here in 2003.
Lime Rock is not one of my favorite tracks, but the Corvette is competitive package here. Coming down into turn one I brake at the four or three-and-a-half sign and turn in kind of high to avoid the bumps at the traditional turn in point, this also gives me good angle to the second part of the corner. The first corner is a third gear corner.
I try to carry good speed through the second part of one, riding third gear it through making sure I hit the apex and make the run to the left hander. This is pretty much a throwaway corner here; the harder you try to take turn three the slower you will end up going.
The run to the next right hander, turn two, is fun I just tap the brake and get back on the gas as it is banked a little and will give you a good run into the right hander to the up hill.
The right hander, turn five, before the hill is pretty fast, again in third. Going up the hill I have to breathe the Vette a little or I will get a lot of wheel spin and lose time. If I breathe it right, it really hooks up and it is a bit of a kick as it feels like you have been shot out of a gun. If I breathe it wrong, the rear will get all squirmy and upset the car.
The turn leading to the down hill, turn five, is critical as this sets you up for the fastest portion of the track, although two years ago I was upside down here in my car. I am in third gear going through five and make a shift to fourth just about after the bridge, this slows the car just enough not to have a handful through the last turn. I am almost flat and with fresh tires on cool day it can be done flat. This gets you onto the main straight where the 3R power of the Vette really carries you down the straight.
The race will be run on Monday, May 31 at 12:10 p.m. and televised on Speed Channel on Sunday, June 6 at 1:00 p.m.
