Accolades and Apologies
Monterey, CA. (October 11, 2009) - The SCCA SPEED World Challenge GT Championship race at Laguna Seca ended the season on a positive note for Randy's K-PAX/3R Racing team, with a second place finish for Randy and a fifth place finish for Andy Pilgrim. The team's improvements with the development of the Volvos were obvious from the beginning of the race when Randy got an excellent start off the standing grid. He continued moving through the field, setting his sights on the lead car of James Sofronas. On the last lap, Randy misjudged a racing move and punted Tony Rivera, sending him spinning off course. While the hit was not intentional, Randy felt responsible for putting a friend out.
"I want to apologize to Tony Rivera who is a true sportsman and a really good driver. The incident was all my fault and spoiled everything. If I had a sword, I'd fall on it. I feel that bad about it. Aside from my mistake, both cars ran well and finished well. Throughout the race, it felt like the Toyos didn't have much grip and the brakes felt terrible but it didn't seem to affect the finishing positions. I also got stuck in traffic and had to hang back a little now and then to get the clean air our Volvos need to cool the brakes and engine. The car handled very well and I was able to enjoy a lot of good, close racing. I was so excited to get such a great standing start. I felt like I was shot out of a gun like an all-wheel drive is supposed to feel. Our team has been working hard on that and all our development issues are getting sorted out."
"I would like to thank the entire K-PAX/3R Racing team. Everybody does so much. I would especially like to thank my chief mechanic, Paul Delio, who is such a positive, upbeat, hard working person and a pleasure to have on my team. This was a good finish to the season for K-PAX/3R Racing and I am hoping to run with them in World Challenge GT next year. I would also like to thank my personal sponsors Team Janica Racing, WeatherTech, Prairie Hills Motorsport Club, ChaseCam, and saferacer.com again for their continued support all season long and I look forward to working with them in the future."
Volvo finished third in the Manufacturers' Championship. Randy finished sixth and Andy finished fourth in the Drivers' Championship. These finishing positions are very satisfying considering that this was a development year for the Volvos. The World Challenge GT season finale race at Laguna Seca will be broadcast Tuesday, November 3 at 2 PM EST on SPEED.
