Leighton Reese takes his Banner Engineering Chevy Corvette to the west coast looking to finish 2005 on a positive note in Laguna Seca WCGT finale.
Eden Prairie Minnesota: (October 11, 2005) Leighton Reese, of Minnetonka Minnesota, and his Banner Engineering Chevy Corvette C6 are looking to the hills of Laguna Seca on the magnificent Monterey Peninsula to put a very positive conclusion to the 2005 edition of the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge GT Series as Leighton is looking to build on his performance at Laguna in 2004 and the improvements made during the 2005 season.
"I am totally stoked," said Reese of the season ending race at Laguna Seca this weekend. "Last year we ran really well at Laguna and we've really raised our game over the course of this season so I think we can be podium material again this year."
"I'm not sure that we are pole material because everyone else has raised their game as well," Leighton said realistically.
"But then again that was what I thought at Mosport," Leighton added with a smile. 'And looked what happened there!"
While Reese has shown pole speed in previous event at Mosport, but a first lap melee ended any chances of winning and was clearly podium material in 2004 at Laguna as he was running with the lead duo in 3rd when track debris ended his race early.
Leighton hopes that the 2005 Laguna race will be free of those external problems saying, "I'm expecting a really great race. I just hope that this race runs free of the problems we had at Mosport and the championships are decided fairly and without incidents!"
"I'm not sure if we would have won the race but we would have been right there and with all of those great cars and drivers I was looking forward to a repeat of the great race we had in 2004," Reese said of the 2004 Mosport GT race.
"But unfortunately Max spun in front of the field so that race was not what it could have been," Reese said philosophically.
While Reese feels that he and his Banner Corvette can run with the best at Laguna he sees the Porsches and particularly the Porsche of Wolf Henzler, who won this race in 2004, to be the cars to beat.
"Mosport is a combination of high speed turns and is a perfect track for the Corvette," Leighton said of his recent pole winning speed during Round 10 at the Canadian Mosport track. "But Laguna Seca is a track that favors a short wheelbase car like the Porsche that get through the tight turns well."
"We are part of the GM racing family so I admit that I would like to see Cadillac win the championship, but they have their work cut out for them, but we'll see what we can do for ourselves and for GM," Reese concluded with his trademark smile.
Look for the Leighton Reese and the Banner Engineering Chevy Corvette C6 to make an impact on Sunday October 16th as the SCCA pro Racing SPEED World Challenge GT Series concludes another memorable season at Laguna Seca.
The GT race for the SPEED World Challenge Series is scheduled to begin at 1:50 PM Pacific Time. The race will be shown live on the SPEED TV network on Saturday October 16th at 5 PM Eastern Time.
