MONTEREY, Calif. (Sept. 5, 2003) -- The TriPoint Motorsports team of Jeff Altenburg, of Ellicott City, Md., and Shauna Marinus, of Folsom, Calif., set the pace in both practice sessions at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Pierre Kleinubing, of Brazil, rounded-out the top three.

Driving the No. 40 TriPoint Motorsports/Mazdaspeed Mazda Protege ES, Altenburg set a combined fast time of 1:44.002 (77.467 mph) on the 11-turn 2.238 mile circuit.

"The car rolled of the truck pretty good," Altenburg said. "Laguna is one of my favorite tracks but the conditions change so much. The cars are fast in the morning and I am really surprised we got as close to our time this afternoon as we did. Typically we've been dropping off a half-second or more in the afternoon. I guess that means that we went the right direction with the car. I was working with my teammate Shauna, which always pays off. She is very quick."

Marinus, driving the No. 4 TriPoint Motorsports/Mazdaspeed Mazda Protege ES, was second-fastest with a time of 1:44.046 (77.435 mph). Kleinubing turned the third fastest lap of 1:44.139 (77.365 mph) in his RealTime Racing Acura RSX-S.

Point leader Bill Auberlen, of Hermosa Beach, Calif., and Peter Cunningham, of West Bend, Wis., completed the top five.

Qualifying for Saturday's Round Eight race is scheduled for 10:55 a.m. (PDT). The 25-lap, 55.96-mile race will make its standing start at 3:35 p.m.
