MONTEREY, Calif. (Sept. 5, 2003) -- Mike Fitzgerald, of Phoenix, Ariz., led both of the SCCA Speed World Challenge GT practice sessions Friday at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Rookies Bryce Miller, of Parsippany, N.J., and Paul Mumford, of Yorba Linda, Calif., completed the top three.

Fitzgerald, driving the 3R Racing Coors Light/1st Interstate Inns Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, set a blistering fast lap of 1:33.517 (86.153 mph) on the 11-turn 2.238 mile track in the late afternoon session.

"We had a pretty successful test day yesterday," Fitzgerald said. "So, we really didn't have to change much today. We ran some sticker tires this afternoon, which is why I think we were able to go as fast in the afternoon as we did in the morning. So far so good, but we were fastest in both practice sessions at Road America and I qualified fifth. I'm hoping not to repeat that performance."

Miller, driving the No. 81 BMW Team PTG BMW M3, was 10th quickest in the morning session, but turned a lap of 1:33.743 (85.945 mph) in the afternoon session to put him second quickest on the day. Miller is driving the fifth car for BMW Team PTG at Mazda Raceway this weekend.

Mumford turned the third fastest time of 1:33.932 (85.780 mph) in his Magellan Financial Dodge Viper Competition Coupe.

Speed GT point leader Bill Auberlen, of Hermosa Beach, Calif., was fourth quickest, while teammate Boris Said, of Carlsbad, Calif., was fifth.

Nineteen drivers were under the existing track record of 1:38.176 (82.064 mph) set in 2001 qualifying by Peter Cunningham.

Speed GT qualifying is set for 10:30 a.m. (PDT) Saturday, Sept.6. The 27-lap, 60.26-mile Round Eight race will make its standing start at 3:05 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7.
