Steven Piantieri joins Irish Mike's Racing.
Team tests new Impreza for Speed World Challenge opener.
Orlando, Fla. (February 26, 2003) -- Michael Flynn, owner of Irish Mike's Racing, announced today that Steven Piantieri will join him in a two-car SCCA Pro Racing Speed World Challenge effort, campaigning the normally aspirated Subaru Impreza.
In preparation for the upcoming season, both Irish Mike's Racing drivers took part in the car's initial shakedown test on the 1.7 mile club course at Sebring International Raceway.
"I am very happy to have Steven on board as we both have raced in SCCA Club Racing Improved Touring and understand how to handle a racecar with limited power," said Flynn. "Steven understands what it takes to get the car set up for the track.
"Steven has had the good fortune of having visited several of the tracks that we will be going to, so we will look to him to help fill us in as best we can on these tracks."
For the Sebring test, the Subaru was set up using data the team had gathered from years of experience at the track in IT racing, although in varying models of car. The team was able to combine this information together and come up with set up that worked for the Impreza.
"We have a car that will be able to challenge in the Speed World
Challenge," said Flynn, after the successful initial test.
"We can go racing."
The Subaru Impreza WRX in the turbo configuration has competed quite successfully in the World Rally Championship as well as SCCA ProRally, but this is the first season for the normally aspirated road racing car.
