Fort Worth, Texas -- Michael Galati driving the Champion Audi/Audi S4 Competition won the first round of the Speedvision World Challenge GT Series race at Texas Motorspeedway. Teammate Derek Bell brought his Audi home in 13th place, despite being hit by a Corvette.
Galati started the race from the second row following his third place qualifying effort. After the drop of the green flag, Galati moved into second place, and on the third lap, he passed for the lead. The battle then came from the Mustang of Boris Said. On lap 23 Galati passed Said for the lead and the win.
Derek Bell had a good start to capitalize on his fourth place qualifying effort. Bell ran in the top five for the first half of the race. Then on lap 22, Bell was hit by a Corvette sending him off the track and back to 16th place. He managed to finish in 13th position.
Michael Galati, #9 Champion Audi/Audi S4 Competition: "We came up short for the pole yesterday, but the win is great. I had a great battle with Boris in the Mustang. On this type of circuit the quattro power seems to really work well."
Derek Bell, #8 Speedvision Legends of Motorsport/Audi S4 Competition: "I had a good start and was quite comfortable running in the top five. The car then sputtered a little and that is when I was hit by the Corvette. Thirteenth place is quite disappointing, but the Champion team's work in the off season seems to have paid off."
Rod Bymaster, manager Audi Sport North America: "Audi has had quite a day with a win in ALMS and Speedvision. Michael and Derek did a great job. It was fun to watch Michael battle with the Mustang. The Champion team has worked hard to improve the car in the off season, and with both cars running in the top five for most of the race, we are optimistic for the rest of the season."
