Sebring, Florida -- Michael Galati, driving the Champion Audi/Audi S4 Competition, fought a 55-minute duel with Peter Cunningham's NSX to finish second in the World Challenge GT Series race at Sebring.
At the drop of the green flag, Galati surpassed his third place starting position to run in second. Then on lap two, going into turn one, he passed Cunningham and led the race. Galati then held the lead for 14 laps before the NSX driver passed a defensive Audi on the outside of the last turn, taking the lead and the win.
Teammate Derek Bell accidentally hit the fuel cut-off switch in his Legends of Motorsport/Audi S4 Competition, causing it to stall on the opening lap. When the sports car legend realized what had happened, he was already a lap down.
Galati was able to post the fastest lap of the race on lap three, with a time of 2:22.359. Galati is tied for the lead in the championship with 62 points.
Michael Galati, #9, Champion Audi/Audi S4 Competition: "I could get out of the corner better, thanks to the quattro drive of the Audi. However, the lighter NSX was better under braking. He went to the outside in the last turn, and there wasn't much I could do. It was good clean racing, right up to the end."
Derek Bell, #8, Legends of Motorsport/Audi S4 Competition: "I knocked the fuel pump switch to OFF with my hand and stalled the motor. Once I figured out what had happened, I was able to keep going, but unfortunately I was a lap down. It is too bad; I had a good car."
Rod Bymaster, manager, Audi Sport North America: "It was a great race. Michael did an excellent job and drove a nice clean race. Derek had some tough luck, but he really ran competitively when he was able to get restarted. Michael is leading the points, so this is a great beginning to the year."
