Cunningham Leads Opening SPEED Touring Car Denver Practice
DENVER (Aug. 11, 2006) -- Peter Cunningham, of Grafton, Wis., led the opening of two practice sessions for this weekend's SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge Touring Car Championship Round Six race, part of the Grand Prix of Denver. Teammates Brandon Davis, of Denver, and Eric Curran, of E. Hampton, Mass., completed the top three.
Driving the No. 1 Acura Certified Pre-Owned/RealTime Racing, Cunningham turned a fastest time of 1:22.066 (72.687 mph) around the 1.657-mile circuit about halfway through the 30-minute session. Times were slowed after that point owing to a brief rain shower that dampened a portion of the circuit.
"The car feels great and the track is just as I remember it," Cunningham said. "It felt good. Last year, we were carrying 250lbs of REWARDS weight and were not very fast.
"I ran at a street circuit in a TSX last weekend in a different series, so it's like getting back in the saddle here."
The top five froze when the rain began to fall.
"It only rained in sections and there was really only one corner that was really damp," Cunningham added. "The rest of the track was a little wet, which made it pretty fun."
Denver University student Davis drove his No. 20 Acura Certified Pre-Owned/RealTime Racing Acura TSX to the second-fastest time of 1:22.406 (72.388 mph), followed by defending race Champion Curran, in his RealTime Acura RSX with a 1:22.562 (72.251 mph).
Randy Pobst, of Gainesville, Ga., was fourth quick in his No. 73 Mazdaspeed/Tri-Point Motorsports Mazda 6, followed by point leader Pierre Kleinubing's No. 42 Acura Certified Pre-Owned/RealTime Racing Acura TSX.
Final practice is Friday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. (Mountain). Sunday's race begins at 4 p.m.
