ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (Aug. 23, 2003) -- In honor of the late RealTime Racing crew chief Jerome Zimmermann, SCCA Pro Racing announced yesterday that the SCCA Speed World Challenge Crew Chief of the Year award will be known as the Zimmermann Cup.
The new award was established in Zimmermann's honor for his dedication, passion and success in the SCCA Speed World Challenge Championships. In Zimmermann's six years as crew chief for RealTime Racing, his efforts led to five Speed Touring Car Drivers' Championships.
Crew chiefs in both the GT and Touring Car series are eligible to win the Zimmermann Cup, which will be awarded annually. The award's winner will be determined by the SCCA Pro Racing staff.
"The Zimmermann Cup will be awarded to a crew chief whose excellence in racing is exemplified with similar attributes that Jerry showed for the sport," said Mitch Wright, Vice President and General Manager of SCCA Pro Racing.
The announcement was made at the Speed Touring Car driver's meeting at Road America and it was met with a round of applause from all in attendance, showing the respect that many in the paddock had for Zimmermann. The Milwaukee resident passed away July 22 as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.
In addition to the Zimmermann Cup, SCCA Pro Racing announced that it will continue with both the Speed GT and Touring Car Crew of the Year awards. These awards will be voted on by the teams and awarded, along with the Zimmermann Cup, at the season-ending awards ceremony.
