FAO SCHWARZ PROMO -- As part of their presenting sponsorship, FAO Schwarz is helping to promote the Las Vegas event. Efforts include involving SportsCar in the Grand Opening of the Las Vegas store that attracted more than 360,000 people over the Labor Day weekend. The Grand Opening featured a Celebrity Challenge remote control car race that was covered by E! Entertainment TV network. Participating celebrities included child actors Candace Cameron Bure, Andrew Keegan and Jodie Sweetin. FAO Schwarz is also tagging event information on 100 TV spots. Continuing in-store promotion include signage, brochures, SportsCar videos playing and a free general admission ticket with the every $50 purchase.


TEST DAY -- A SportsCar-sanctioned Test Day is scheduled for Thursday, September 25, from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Cost is $400.00 per car and payable at SportsCar registration at the track.

SPORTSCAR HOSPITALITY -- Two different hospitality options are available for SportsCar teams' special guests and sponsors at the Festival of Road Racing: The Grand Prix Club offers first-class service and surroundings, including gourmet cuisine, beverage service and closed circuit TV. Also available is Private Motorhome Hospitality space, which is complete with full facility hook-ups for $1500.00. RECORD ENTRY -- A record field of 21 cars is entered for the Las Vegas race. New entries include Paul Debban and Rich Grupp in Jim Downing's #62 NEC Cellular Mazda Kudzu (3-rotor) and Bill Dollahite and Anthony Lazzaro in the #97 Compaq/S3 Chevrolet Spice.

JOHN PAUL RETURNS -- John Paul, Jr. is entered on the Dyson Fords, marking his return to SportsCar racing after recovering from injuries incurred at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in May.


MCNISH JOINS ROHR -- Allan McNish of Dumfries, Scotland will partner with Andy Pilgrim in Jochen Rohr's Porsche 911 GT1 for the remaining four GTS-1 races of the 1997 season. McNish will make his debut with the Rohr team and race for the first time in the USA next week in Las Vegas. McNish has been the test driver for the Benetton Renault Formula One team since 1993, following three seasons as the test driver for the McLaren Honda F1 team. He is also a Porsche factory test driver and racer ... "That the Benetton and McLaren F1 teams have utilized Allan as their test driver assures me that he has an ability to 'feel' what a race car is doing and to be able to communicate those impressions to his crew," said Rohr. "Testing is a thankless job where your success comes in private, but only the best drivers get hired to do that" ... Pilgrim holds a 33-point advantage over Roger Schramm and Stu Hayner in the GTS-1 point standings.

SECOND PANOZ GTR-1 -- A second Panoz (#96) has been entered at Las Vegas and Pikes Peak for drivers David Brabham and Eric Bernard. Brabham joined Doc Bundy and Andy Wallace to win at Watkins Glen in the #66 Panoz. Bernard drove the car on its debut at Sebring, setting a new race lap record.

NEW BMW M3 -- Protoype Technology Group will unveil a fifth BMW M3 at Pikes Peak. The car is the second four-door M3 in the series and will be driven by Eduardo Pellerano and John Paul, Jr.

FIA GT NEWS -- Forty-eight cars are entered for round eight of the FIA GT Championship this weekend at Donington Park in England ... Team BMW drivers J.J. Lehto and Steve Soper still lead the drivers championship, but by just three points over Mercedes pilot Bernd Schneider. In the team championship, BMW Motorsport leads AMG Mercedes by four points ... The #11 Mercedes CLK GTR of Schneider and Alexander Wurz was the fastest in today's (Friday's) first three practice sessions,.

BLACK MAGIC PRO SERIES -- On the heels of the record 28 entries at the Mosport Festival, another large field is expected at Las Vegas. Two new teams join the series at Las Vegas: Bud Clark is driving the #00 CRA Racing entry and Todd Harris is in the #14 Flat Out Racing entry.

SPEEDVISION CUP NEWS -- Toyo Tires is offering teams two chances to win a free set of Toyo Proxes RA-1 race tires at Las Vegas. Toyo is hosting a group of dealers at the event who will judge the contests: one for the best-appearing team and a second for the most creative use of the Toyo graphics on race cars.

SERIES BANQUET INFO -- With the season winding down, plans are underway for series' awards banquets. More specific information will be available soon, but following are details to date: Black Magic Pro Series -- Plans are to host the banquet on Saturday, October 18 in a trackside pavilion at Sebring, thus allowing the series' participants to enjoy the FIA GT Championship and Exxon World SportsCar Championship races. SPEEDVISION Cup -- Sunday, October 19, Disney World Swan in Lake Buena Vista. Cocktails Reception from 6:30 - 7:30, Dinner at 7:30, and Awards Ceremony at 8:30. Exxon Supreme GT/Exxon World SportsCar Championship -- Monday, October 27, Hyatt Regency - Monterey. Cocktail Reception from 5:30 - 6:30, Dinner at 6:30, and Awards Ceremony at 8:00.

EURO WSC SERIES PROPOSED -- SportsCar will propose to the FIA World Council on September 18 plans to organize an FIA-sanctioned European World SportsCar Championship in 1998. This is in addition to the SportsCar-sanctioned North American World SportsCar Championship that is currently in its fourth season ... "A draft of the rules for the European Championship was circulated at the last FIA SportsCar Commission meeting on September 3," stated SportsCar chairman Andrew Evans. "We expect the rules and 1998 schedule to be completed shortly. We are waiting for the 1998 FIA GT calendar to be decided" ... "The European World SportsCar Championship replaces the idea of a Euro-American World SportsCar Challenge that would have seen select races in Europe and North America comprising an overall championship," said Evans. "After discussing the idea with the FIA and both European and North American World SportsCar teams, we've determined that it is best to have the two separate series."

FERRARI CHALLENGE NEWS -- Tom Papadopoulos takes a slim 10 point lead over Carlos Hank, Jr. going into the penultimate round of the 1997 Ferrari Challenge. Defending Challenge Champion, Steve Earle, is in third place, 25 points behind Hank, Jr. ... The final round of the 1997 Challenge has been scheduled at Texas World Speedway, December 13 & 14. This event replaces the races cancelled at Homestead and Mosport ... Two father and son teams are entered at Las Vegas: Carlos Hank Sr. and Jr. drive for Ferrari of Houston, while Benny Caiola and his son Alfred are driving for Wide World of Cars.
