SPORTSCAR AT LE MANS-- Stefan Johansson, Michele Alboreto and Tom Kristensen piloted a Joest Racing Porsche WSC car to the win in last weekend’s 24 Hours of Le Mans. 1997 Sebring 12-hour winner Stefan Johansson became only the second driver to win both Sebring and Le Mans in the same year. Johansson won Sebring in a Ferrari and Le Mans in a Porsche, reversing the result of the only previous driver to achieve the feat. Olivier Gendebien won the 1960 Sebring 12-hour in a Porsche RS60 and then won the Le Mans 24- hour in a Ferrari 250 Testa Rosa. Moretti Racing’s Ferrari 333 SP finished sixth overall and third in class at the hands of Gianpiero Moretti, Didier Theys and Max Papis. The Kevin Doran-led team overcame several ‘delays’ due to alternator problems, including a 76 minute pit stop (18 laps) to install a new alternator and battery. Downing/Atlanta’s Mazda Kudzu DLM experienced no major problems, but spent more than three hours in the pits for several small repairs (replaced a control arm and shock, removed an air filter that was sucked into a trumpet, and repaired some structural damage). However, the driving team of Jim Downing, Franck Freon and Yoshi Terada persevered to finish 17th overall. MOMO Ferrari driver Antonio Hermann finished eighth overall, fourth in GT1, aboard the BMS Scuderia Italia Porsche 911 GT1. Andy Pilgrim was the top-finishing American driver, finishing second in the GT2 class -- tenth overall -- in the Roock Porsche 911 GT2. ‘You don’t win Le Mans on the track, you lose it in the pits,’ said Pilgrim. ‘We lost 50 minutes at the two-hour mark due to an oil leak. We had a three-lap lead at 17 hours when the left-hand turbo went, and the right-hand turbo went at 21 hours.’ The team made up eight laps in the final three hours but fell one lap short of the GT2 class win. Other SportsCar regulars who competed at Le Mans included Andy Wallace, James Weaver, Doc Bundy, Wayne Taylor, Franz Konrad, Steve Saleen, Price Cobb, Larry Schumacher, Michelle Ligonnet, Eric van de Poele, Marc Duez and Eliseo Salazar.
