Sports Toyota Championship to be Sanctioned by SPORTS CAR through 2001

TAMPA, FL (August 19,1998) Professional Sports Car Racing (SPORTS CAR) and Sports Mondial, LLC. announced today that an agreement has been reached for SPORTS CAR to sanction the Sports Toyota Championship for the next three years.

"The agreement, which extends until 2001, will allow the Sports Toyota Championship to continue to build upon the great working relationship that we have with SPORTS CAR," said Kevin Singleton, President of Sports Mondial, LLC. "It solidifies the Sports Toyota Championship's place as a development series into higher levels of competition and allows our drivers to be a part of the American Le Mans Series weekends beginning in 1999."

Sports Toyota Championship cars are powered by identical 1600cc, four-cylinder Toyota engines, similar to those used in the Toyota Atlantic Series, and all cars race on identical Yokohama racing slicks. The open cockpit, closed wheel design is similar in shape to World Sports Cars.

The 1998 Sports Toyota Championship is an eight race championship. Round five occurs this weekend at Heartland Park, Topeka, KS, and is the only race that will occur on a non-SPORTS CAR weekend. The remainder of the 1998 season will feature 40-minute races during the NAPA Auto Parts Sebring Classic September 17-19 at Sebring International Raceway, the inaugural Petit Le Mans event October 8-11 at Road Atlanta, and the Visa Sports Car Championships October 23-25 at Laguna Seca Raceway.
