NORTH YORK - Two $1 million Ferraris will be roaring up Yonge Street Monday, Aug. 25 as Mosport Festival week kicks off with a demonstration of high-speed pitstops in front of North York City Hall.
The competition will feature Canadian driver Ron Fellows, who will be driving a Ferrari 333SP at Mosport, against team-mate Rob Morgan. In addition to the pitstop competition, the Exxon Supreme GTS-1 Ford Mustang Cobra of Unionville's Scott Maxwell and the SPEEDVISION Cup car of Devon Powell, will also be on display in Mel Lastman Square. Rob MacDonald, an up-and-coming Canadian driver will also be on hand.
The two curb lanes of southbound Yonge Street will be closed south of Park Home Ave., adjacent to Mel Lastman Square, from 10:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. The event is co-sponsored by The North York Mirror and Q107 Radio.
Each man will drive the Ferrari from the designated starting point to the "pit" area, stop and wait while the crew changes the two front tires. When the change has been completed, the car will leave the pit and cross a designated spot. The crew/driver combination that completes the change in the least amount of time is the winner.
And, just to prove it isn't as easy as it looks, media representatives are being invited to try their hand at it. If you wish to enter a four-person team, call Bruce O'Neill at BO'NAFIDE Communications Inc. no later than 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22. The winning media team will receive $100 worth of Mosport Festival tickets and SportsCar T-shirts to donate to the charity of its choice.
The Mosport Festival features three days of exciting motorsports and a 12-hour music festival on Saturday, highlighted by the appearance of Tom Cochrane, The Goo Goo Dolls, Sass Jordan and other well known Canadian groups.
Canadians will play a prominent role on the track, as well. Besides Fellows, Maxwell and Devon Powell, Ross Bentley of Vancouver, and Jason Priestley, star of the hit TV series Beverly Hills 90210 will be racing. Bentley competes in the Exxon World SportsCar Championship series while Priestley and Maxwell co-drive in both the Exxon Supreme GT Series Presented by Virgin Interactive and the SPEEDVISION Cup race.
Tickets are available by calling Ticket Master at (416) 870-1212.
