James Davison joins Velocity Motorsports
Prospect Hill, North Carolina USA. -- After a very successful test at Moroso Motorsports Park, Velocity Motorsports is pleased to announce that Australian racing driver James Davison has joined the team to contest the 2007 Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear.
James competed in the Formula BMW USA Series in 2005, winning at the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway. In 2006 he drove for the now defunct Team Australia in Formula Atlantic, achieving his best result at the San Jose Grand Prix defeating teammate and series champion Simon Pagenaud. James is a member of the famous Davison family, son of former Formula 5000 racing driver Jon Davison, President of Sandown International Motor Raceway in Australia. James' grandfather Lex Davison was four times winner of the Australian Grand Prix, and is cousin to Alex and Will Davison who both have competed successfully internationally and now drive Australian V8 Supercars.
The Star Mazda Series is the most widely supported open wheel category in the United States, attracting fields in excess of 40 cars. The 12 Round Championship is contested at a number of North America's most prestigious circuit racing events, including the American LeMans Series, Champ Car and the NASCAR sanctioned Grand Am Sports Cars. The Star Mazda race car is an open wheel carbon fiber chassis, powered by a 240 horsepower Mazda Rotary engine with a 6 speed sequential Hewland gearbox.
James Davison -- 2007 Star Mazda Race Driver
"I've always considered Star Mazda to be an important stepping stone in a young drivers' career. The series is very competitive, well organized and offers sponsors excellent exposure with every round televised on Speed Channel. Velocity and the quality of their personnel is the perfect team for me, last season toughened me up after being put in difficult circumstances and has motivated me more than ever to compete for the championship."
Jay Wentz -- Team Principal/Director Oval Track Racing
"I have tested many young drivers and I have to say James impressed me quicker than any. His immediate car control abilities, his excellent feedback to our engineers and his constant focus in the car. James also has a desire to win second to none as well as a wonderful outlook on life and is mature beyond his years. I simply can't wait to get this championship season underway."
Price Cobb -- Team Principal/Director Race Operations
"Having raced for most of my life, I am now in the enjoyable position of looking for and helping new talent. This past week, Velocity Motorsports tested James Davison in its Star Mazda race car for two days with some remarkable results. Never having driven this car, not having seen the circuit, James adapted swiftly, breaking the track record!
From there it was only downhill with James' broad knowledge of cars and his own personality creating instant chemistry with the team. Both in the dry and in the wet, James continued to show me a level of maturity and skill way beyond his years. The team now has a much quicker record for the books.
In all my years I have seen only two other drivers with his skill set so we look forward to helping his quest of racing as a profession. We know that after his time with Velocity he will be seen at the highest levels of racing worldwide, which we will have a considerable amount of pride knowing this!"
