Velocity Motorsports and Logan Gomez record best finish of the season at Road Atlanta
Prospect Hill, N.C.- The penultimate round of the Star-Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear would see the end of an era at Velocity Motorsports. Two of the Star-Mazda Series drivers for Velocity Motorsports would say farewell on this weekend at Road Atlanta. 2005 Masters Series Champion, John Pew, would step down due to a shoulder injury and watch 17-year old Ricky Taylor drive the #15 NVG Residential sponsor car. And recent Rolex Sports Car Series Salt Lake City winner, Mark Patterson, would bring an end to his Star-Mazda career this weekend also. The faces of the team are slowly changing as 17 year old Logan Gomez welcomed his new teammate for this weekend event. Gomez was to set the mark early. In session #1 he recorded a lap of 1:21.267 for fourth quickest on the time sheet. Unfortunately, just prior to qualifying, the 2.54 mile Road Atlanta circuit would experience a huge rain storm. With a wet track and drying conditions, the team took to the track. Taylor would find a quick time to place P6. Patterson, who would have only one practice session, would grab P11. Gomez was unable to get a clean lap and ended up P16 for the start of the race.
Mark Patterson, Driver #60 Quotes:
"A Wonderful Race, but I finished a little earlier than the rest due to a 16 year old who said "he owned that corner." The Velocity guys prepared the car beautifully, lovely setup on the car as it ran great on new and old tires. This was my last race in the Star-Mazda Series as I will dedicate my racing fulltime in a Daytona Prototype next year. It was a great run for 2 ½ years with Velocity Motorsports. I appreciate the whole effort put forward by Ken Erb and his team. Also a thanks to Ken Burris of the BMS Group for his services."
Logan Gomez, Driver #23 Quotes:
"I got by a couple of drivers early in the first lap of the race as I started P16. We had some trouble in qualifying trying to get spacing and to get a fast lap. The aero package for the race allowed me to follow cars through the corners without upsetting the handling. The car was really well setup and I was able to make passes on the straights. The team did an excellent job all weekend and today I believe we proved a point."
Ricky Taylor, Driver #15 Quotes:
"I got a lot of assistance this weekend from Ozz Negri, John Pew and the Velocity team. At the start I was sleeping a little but I then settled into a rhythm. The race was going well, but we had some bad luck as the motor let go. I was pleased with the Velocity Motorsports professionalism and they helped me get comfortable in the car this weekend."
Ken Erb, Velocity Motorsports Team Principal Quotes:
"What an exciting race! Logan put in an excellent drive coming from P16. After one lap he was in P10 and, with the help of some yellows, he got up front and finished in P4. If the race had finished under green, who knows we could have finished on the podium. Ricky did a phenomenal job, worked methodically, paced himself and learned the car this weekend. We were happy with his P6 qualifying efforts. He got passed early in the race but was running P10 before an engine failure sidelined him. Mark Patterson shows up and does only one practice session and runs a 1:22.442. That was spectacular. He then qualifies in P11. He ran a solid top P15 all day until he was taken out in an incident. The team was looking for as strong of a team finish as we had at the season opener at Sebring with two in the top ten and all three cars in the top 15. But that is what sometimes happens in racing."
The weekend outcome for the Velocity Motorsports team was the team's best points performance of the season in the team points championship. They were able to get a second place team finish for the weekend. Logan Gomez was also able to gain valuable points in the drivers championship as he now sits in 7th place only 19 points from 4th place. The Road Atlanta race will be aired on the SPEED Channel, Saturday, October 14th, at 1PM Eastern Time. The Velocity Motorsports team is back in North Carolina preparing for the season finale at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in California. The race will be held on Saturday, October 21st, with the American Le Mans Series event.
