Robbie Pecorari captures pole position at Road Atlanta
September 29, 2005. Braselton, Georgia. Sitting second in points with two races remaining, Robbie Pecorari, of Aston, Pennsylvania, powered his SAI Hydraulics/Andersen Walko Racing Mazda around the 2.5-mile Road Atlanta circuit in a time of 1:20.554 to capture his first pole position of the season in qualifying for Round Eleven of the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear.
Joining Pecorari on the front row with a time of 1:20.948, making it an all Andersen Walko Racing front row, will be Graham Rahal, of New Albany, Ohio, in the Bobby Rahal Automotive Group Mazda. Ryan Justice, who led the first half of the spring event at Road Atlanta qualified third in his Sikkens AKZO_Nobel Northwest Autosports Mazda with a time of 1:21.069.
"We didn't change a thing from practice, we just had new tires," Pecorari, who topped the time sheets in the final practice session ahead of qualifying, explained. "The car is the best it's been, not only this weekend but also all year. It's perfect, I couldn't ask for more. Now all I can do is try to get as many points as possible and see what (Raphael) Matos does."
With the pole position Pecorari inches one point closer to championship points leader Rapahel Matos, of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, who qualified fourth overall in his Ocean Tomo Racing Mazda. James Hinchcliffe,of Oakville, Ontario, Canada, entered the weekend third in points with an eye on the championship but will face an uphill battle after he could only post the fifteenth fastest time in his NOCO Mobil 1 AIM Autosport Mazda.
The penultimate round of the championship, being held this weekend as part of the American Le Mans Series Petit Le Mans festivities, is scheduled for thirty laps with a starting time of 2:50 PM Eastern Time on Friday, September 30th.
