With the #74 UniSelect Kevin Lacroix takes to the Road in Wisconsin
St-Eustache, August 17th, 2006. -- Kevin Lacroix will head to Wisconsin this weekend to compete in the ninth round of the Star Mazda championship on the famous Road America race track. The 17-year old French Canadian presently sits third in the standings with the #74 UniSelect car by virtue of four podiums and six Top Five. His only other finish was a sixth place in Montreal, although he was second when he brushed a wall with two laps to go. Road America is a fast 14-turn 4,068 mile facility that all drivers appreciate and the kind of test Lacroix likes to face.
"I like fast race tracks where you can challenge the curves, said Lacroix, by comparison to urban tracks where you're not sure what lies around the concrete bend. John Walko and I have already analyzed some previous data and we have a pretty good idea how of the setup we will use. This is the kind of track we both like. Anyway, we have to come out on top if we want to keep climbing in the standings. Still, what ever happens, I'm learning from every outing with the JWR team and from a car that offers a hundred more horse power than what I had last year."
A program over two days
Part of the ALMS program, the Star Mazda schedule will be limited to Friday and Saturday. The first day will be assessed for two 45-minute practice sessions at 8:00 AM and 2:50 PM. On the second, qualifying session will be at the same early time, 8:00 AM while the green will be waved in the afternoon at 1:05 for a 45-minute race. "With such a schedule, he added, I have to wake up very early and have a good workout before I sit in the car. When I take to the track, I have to feel like it around noon."
Best rookie in the standings
After his fourth place at the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres, Lacroix still holds third place in the standings with 252 points, 37 out of first place, but 24 ahead of the second rookie. "We have some of the best race tracks in America still coming in the remaining four rounds, he closed. Road America, Mosport, Road Atlanta and Mazda Raceway are all very exciting."
