Moses Smith wins round three at Pike Peaks

June 16, 2002 - Remembering Dad

After a grueling sixty-lap race, winner Moses Smith looked none the worse for wear. Battling inclement weather, and a late start; Moses was able to continue his winning streak on the ovals.

"Running out front all weekend, and leading every lap of the race, I don't think I could ask for a more perfect weekend," the triumphant Smith said after exiting his race vehicle. "Ron Roland of R-Sport gave me a car that was great - - right off of the trailer. I was able to run anywhere on the track with confidence."

After smiling for the flash of cameras, Moses restarted, "We are a young team. It was very exciting for my first North American Championship victory as a driver to be Ron's first as a team owner.  I was a little concerned when the rain started falling mid-race. That bunched us all up again. Fortunately, I was able to get some distance when Kusy and Anderson started fighting each other for second."

When I caught up to Moses a little later in the evening, he was heading out for the airport. The young man look a tad reflective, so I asked him, "Moses what are you thinking?"

"Well, I'm having good thoughts about my dad. He's back in San Diego. Family is so very important. It seems appropriate that I should win my first televised race on Father's Day. I started karting when I was ten. Dad spent so much time with me as I was growing up. He not only taught me how to race but he gave me the true sense of sportsmanship and honor. "

Moses' dad, Paul Smith ran sand drags and crewed for an off-road truck team. Moses went on to explain that his parents were not able make it to the race this weekend, but were with him in spirit. However, the entire HASA Pool Product family was able to fly out to the track.

"It was great to have the HASA family at the race track this weekend. Their emotional support at gave me that extra boost I needed". Moses added,

Moses wanted to send his dad a special "Happy Father's Day" greeting. "Thanks for all your patience and humor."

With his flag-to-flag victory, Moses moves up to second place in the North American Championship point race as the series heads to Mid Ohio. Scott Kusy and Mike Andersons shared podium honors with a second and third respectively.
