Thirty-Two participants in the Star Mazda North American Championship took to the track at the Sebring International Raceway this Friday. This highly competitive series was one of the seven support races to the American Le Mans Series Sebring 12 hour race.
After a year hiatus from the Florida track, Team Tomlin returned to this raceway for the series 2003 opener. Most notable this year was the addition of a third car to the team. While negotiations are still on going as of the writing of this report, if this weekend's results are an indicator, it would appear that young racing standout, Moses Smith will be joining the team for the season.
"I have been working very hard in this off-season to secure sponsorship," Moses reported. "Negotiations with Team Tomlin came very last minute, so we are still trying to hash out the particulars."
Moses started the weekend with new car colors and a new crew. However, Smith reported that the adjustment period was minimal and the team gelled almost immediately. "The crew is awesome to work with, I am looking forward to the rest of the season." Unfortunately, mechanical gremlins caught up with Moses during qualifying, allowing Moses to post only two laps. The problem was diagnosed later as a fuel delivery problem. The end result was a thirteenth position on the starting grid.
"The start was a little crazy, but very exciting," Moses remembers. The talented racer stayed with his race strategy and began working his way through the middle of the pack. "I knew that I had a good solid racecar." Despite the excellent caliber of his fellow racers, Moses managed to advance from thirteenth to podium with a third place finish before the conclusion of the sixteen lap race. "I am happy with my finish, and excited to be back in the seat, racing, after a long off season"
Moses would like to thank and acknowledge his returning sponsors, HASA Pool Products; Justice Brothers; and ProMotorSports 1 along with his new team, Team Tomlin for their continuing support and involvement.
