Monterey, CA (Sept. 11, 2003) -- Moses Smith had a very successful weekend in Monterey, California while competing at the 2.24 mile, eleven turn, circuit of Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca.
"This is how a weekend of racing is supposed to be!" Moses explained on the podium just moments before spraying champagne over 2nd and 3rd place finishers. From the moment Moses put on his helmet to initiate the weekend, he was fast. Thursday would host the Promoter's Test Day in which Moses would post the fastest time of the day. This was very encouraging for the Team Tomlin/HASA crew, leading into the second day of testing on Friday.
Although Moses would only post the second fastest time on Friday, when asked if he was worried, he confidently commented, "We are here for the race win, they can have the Pole." This would be the second visit to Laguna Seca for the Star Mazda North American Championship. "When we were here in June, I finished second in the championship points. We had a great car, but I was not able to challenge for first place. The team took a lot of notes about the set-up, and we came here with a lot of confidence." Moses elaborated.
After the Saturday qualifying session, the grid would place Moses in 3rd position, well within striking distance. As the Green flag dropped for early Sunday morning race, the Polesitter, car #46, would enter Turn Two too fast for the cold track conditions, and spun coming to a complete stop in the middle of the track. Competitors would have to split around him, some down the inside, the others on the outside. Moses would choose the outside, which placed him in 2nd place after clearing the incident. Moses would remain in second only until Turn 11 in which third place Mike McDowell would sneak his way by.
"As I entered Turn 11, I rushed my down shift, and missed the first gear gate. This slowed me just enough that Mike was able to get by." Moses explained the pass on the first lap. Now in third place Moses would keep the pressure on first place Mike Potekhen, and second place Mike McDowell. The running order would not change until after the first caution period, when Moses would use the restart to his advantage to get by second place. Two laps later, Moses would take the lead with an amazing pass around the outside of Turn Two.
"I used the caution flag to cool my tires and ready myself for a charge to the front, I had been paying attention to Potekhen and McDowell over driving their tires, and knew this would be a good time to act," Moses explained about his charge to the lead.
Once in the lead, Moses opened up a comfortable gap of over a second and made no mistakes to the Checkered Flag, while posting fastest race time on lap thirteen of the twenty-four lap event. Moses wants to thank all of his sponsors including Team Tomlin, HASA Pool Products, RLV Tuned Exhaust, Justice Brothers, and Mothers Car Polishes.
