Daly Wins Fourth Pole of Season for Race One at New Jersey Motorsports Park
Millville, N.J., June 26, 2010 - Conor Daly won his fourth pole of the season in this morning's qualifying session for race one of the doubleheader weekend at New Jersey Motorsports Park. In the split qualifying session, Daly took only three laps around the hot track to make his quickest lap time of 1:15.317-a time that was .603 faster than the second place qualifier. In his rookie season in 2009, Daly won his first and only pole and race at New Jersey Motorsports Park, making the 2.25-mile road course a special milestone in the 18-year-old's career. Now, Daly is focused on winning his fifth race in a row and breaking the record for most consecutive races won in the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear.
"The car was really good once again," said Daly. "Juncos Racing did a fantastic job as always. We worked really hard this weekend, so it's good to be at the top. Qualifying is really important at this track, so we made sure to take advantage of it. I'm really happy, and I'm really looking forward to the race later today."
Teammate Tatiana Calderon qualified with the first group of drivers this morning, topping the time sheets several times throughout her session. As the track got hotter, Calderon finished up her session with a time of 1:17.485. The time was quick enough to see the 17-year-old rookie starting 14th overall on the grid for today's race.
"This was my best qualifying session so far, I think," said Calderon. "It felt much better than the last few races, especially since I'm back on a road course where I'm most comfortable. I made a few mistakes in the session, but that's part of my experience as a rookie. We have another qualifying session and race tomorrow, so hopefully I will fix my mistakes for that. We have a consistent car for the race, so I think we can end up with a good result."
Rusty Mitchell qualified in the second group of cars alongside teammate Conor Daly, turning out a time of 1:16.661 in only four laps and a qualifying result of 9th position. Today's qualifying result for Mitchell far surpasses his results last year at this track, setting the Texan on the right track for the race later today.
"Today's qualifying session could have been better," said Mitchell. "We had a really good car, but I messed up in a couple corners which affected my lap time. I think the car is going to be really good for the race, though, so I'm looking forward to racing my way through the field. Congratulations to the Juncos Racing team and my teammate Conor Daly for winning the pole again."
Round Six of the Star Mazda Championship will commence at 3:00 p.m. EST today at the New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, New Jersey.
