Another podium finish for Kevin Lacroix
Mid-Ohio, Ohio, May 21. -- Kevin Lacroix did it again. In only his second start in the Star Mazda series with his #74 Auto Parts Plus machine, the 17-year old gifted Canadian earned a second podium finish in as many weekeds as he cruised to a third place finish on Mid-Ohio race facility. Lacroix started from 6th place and was patient before passing other cars. A few full-course yellow situations had him secure his position and he motored on to third place in the last laps when his tires had less grip. From 14th place in the standings after one event, Lacroix now moves to 7th after two, only 7 away from 5th place. Next round will be at the famed Milwaukee Mile in two weeks.
"I will have to learn how to be quicker on restarts, said Lacroix. All my passing from 6th to 3rd was done on green laps when I set up the cars ahead and made a clean pass entering fast corners. I was not quick enough on restart to stay on the tail on the car ahead. I secured my position from the cars behind but had to work my way over one or two laps to prepare a passing situation. Nevertheless, I'm happy because I scored valuable points. Last year, I would have tried to overtake for second and risk going off. This year, I settled for third when I felt my tires had less grip on the closing laps."
Now in the Top Five
Lacroix got more seat time with a testing day on Thursday and two practice sessions on Friday. His sixth place in qualifying was about his worse of all. "I was caught in trafic on the opening laps when my tires were at their best and wound up short of second place by 0,15 in the end. I knew I could get a few positions in the race but competition is pretty high in the series and we really have to fight to move ahead."
First oval in Milwaukee
Lacroix and team JWR will take a two week break before they move on to the next race at the famous Milwaukee Mile. "It will be my first oval race, he claimed. But mister Walko reassured me and said I would be quick because he has a good setup for this track and the tires we used are good on oval."
