Fourth Win in Five Starts for McDowell

August 7, 2004 - Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada - After a one-race break in Michael McDowell's winning streak, he found his way back to the top of the podium, at Mosport International Raceway, outside of Toronto, Canada. This was McDowell's fourth win of the season and another dominant performance throughout the weekend.

McDowell was fastest in almost every session leading up to qualifying. In qualifying he turned a time that would place him third on the grid for the start of the race. "Our car was good from the time we rolled it off the trailer," said McDowell, "and while I would have liked to qualify on pole I knew that the car and I were capable of winning." In the race McDowell was able to move to the front quickly and pull out a comfortable lead before a full course yellow allowed the field to rejoin him.

The thirty car field was as competitive as it has been all year with the top three drivers, Michael McDowell, Daniel Di Leo, and Raphael Matos, turning times in the race that were separated by less than a tenth of a second. After the two full course yellow flags McDowell was able to hold on to his lead but it was not without a lot of pressure from second place driver Di Leo. "I was feeling the pressure from Dan (Di Leo)," acknowledged McDowell, "and with my tires starting to go off I knew I would have to drive smart to stay out front for the last three laps." Which he did, taking the checkered flag with only four tenths of a second between himself and Di Leo.

After his win on Saturday McDowell flew to Lexington, Ohio for some more road racing in the Grand-Am Cup Series Mid-Ohio 250. Prior to the weekend McDowell and sports car team owner Rob Finlay announced their intention to compete in the Daytona Prototype series in 2005. They will enlist the racing experience of Cameron Motorsports for the effort and are in the process of selecting co-drivers. The team plans to make its Rolex Series debut in the 2005 Rolex 24 At Daytona.

Round Six of the Star Mazda North American Championship from Mosport International Raceway will be broadcast by Speed Channel on August 29 at 2:00 PM Eastern Time.
