JDC MOTORSPORTS RETURNS TO SITE OF STAR MAZDA TITLE TRIUMPHS
Minnesota-based Team enters Round Three at Laguna Seca as the defending race winner and three-time Masters winner in California
MONTEREY, CALIF. (May 18, 2010) - JDC MotorSports makes its annual trip to the west coast this weekend (May 22-23), seeking to add another Star Mazda Championship Presented by Goodyear victory at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca to its already impressive resume. With overall championship contenders Connor De Phillippi, Caio Lara and Chris Miller being joined by Expert Series race winner Patrick O'Neill and Masters Series race winner Gerry Kraut under the team awning, the Minnesota-based squad has all the tools necessary to make a return visit to victory lane.
The renowned Laguna Seca road course just outside of Monterey, Calif., has proved to be a happy hunting ground for JDC MotorSports over the past several years. Both of JDC's Star Mazda Championship titles were clinched at the California track, with Adam Christodoulou taking home the series crown via a win in 2009, and Cameron earning both the title and Rookie of the Years honors in 2007 with a runner-up finish. Further success at the 2.238-mile track includes three consecutive Masters Series wins - 2007 to 2009, and a one-two finish last season.
One of the early season rookie standouts, De Phillippi enters his home state race having already shown the speed and skill to challenge for top honors on any given weekend. Piloting the No. 11 MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development/Justice Brothers/Sparco/Rock View Farms/Oakley/Power Balance/Reline Athletic/Red Line Oil/JDC MotorSports entry, the Californian has improved each time he has gone racing, most recently earning his first top-five finish on the streets of St. Petersburg, Fla. With friends and family on hand to add further incentive for a good result, many expect the reigning Skip Barber National champion and MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development driver to be among those in contention come race day.
Lara, over the past year and a bit, has established himself as one, if not the most, consistent front-running drivers. Driving the No. 19 MLD/ATW/Molecule/Red Line Oil/JDC MotorSports car, the Brazilian is always part of the mix for positions at the front of the field. The end result has been 13 top-10s in the past 15 races, including a first-ever podium finish in the most recent race in Florida. Given theses results, it would be unwise to forget about Lara when the lights go out to start Round Three.
Thanks to a late season foray into the Star Mazda Championship last season, Miller will get his first chance to race at a track where he has previous series experience in Round Three. This is likely to be a big benefit, as the No. 85 Miller Milling/Red Line Oil/JDC MotorSports racer showed last season - winning the F2000 Championship Series title in his second season of competition - that with some previous track experience he can be a force to be reckoned with.
O'Neill returns to the JDC fold in Round Three as the man to beat in the Expert Series. Piloting the No. 64 O'Neill Construction/Red Line Oil JDC MotorSports entry, the Californian enters his home race as not only the most recent class winner - earning victory on the streets of St. Pete - but also as the defending race Expert Series winner at Laguna Seca. With multiple victories already under his belt on the NorCal race course, O'Neill appears poised for more success in front of friends and family.
After a one race hiatus - for business reasons - Kraut returns to the seat of the No. 55 Dougherty & Co./Dougherty Funding LLC/Red Line Oil/JDC MotorSports entry in Round Three. While the team co-owner has not previously tasted Star Mazda Championship victory champagne at Laguna Seca, he does have multiple Masters victories - including Round One - on his racing resume. Set to challenge for top honors yet again, it would not be a surprise to see Kraut standing on the podium after the checkered flag waves in California.
