Joel Miller Secures another Podium Finish in Utah
Joel Miller qualified off pole and finished 3rd in Round 3 of the Star Mazda Championship this past weekend at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah. Qualifying was an intense battle at the front and after making a stop for a chassis adjustment, Miller was able to produce alap good enough for P2 on the last lap of qualifying.
However, even though Joel was happy to be starting on the front row, he reported an engine noise during the later part of the qualifying session. Despite a worry that the motor was starting to detonate a decision from the team was to not change an engine before the feature race, as this would drop Miller to the back of the start grid.
Miller started P2 for the race that afternoon and fell into second off the starting line. "I got away cleanly at the start but soon realized it was going to be a long race when the detonating noise returned," stated Miller. Throughout the race Joel fell as far back as 6th at one point, but continued to push forward and make opportunities for himself. With pressure coming from cars behind, Miller kept his composure and was able to cross the finish line in 3rd. With this result he solidifies 3rd place in the championship fight.
After the race Miller quoted, "With the situation given I will take a podium finish today. It was definitely a bit frustrating in the race when cars would just drive away in a straight line."
The next round in the championship will be at the New Jersey Motorsports Park in June. In the meantime Joel will be busy testing at both Milwaukee and Iowa Speedway in preparation for the two oval events later this season.
