JDC MOTORSPORTS DRIVERS FINISH ON STAR MAZDA CHAMPIONSHIP PODIUM AT ROAD
Rookie standout Christodoulou finishes third and Kraut adds another Masters Win in Round 12
BRASELTON, GA. (September 28, 2009) -- JDC MotorSports continued its march towards a second Team Championship title in the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear this past Friday (September 25), with two drivers standing on the podium at Road Atlanta in Georgia. Current championship runner-up and rookie leader Adam Christodoulou finished third, while team co-owner Gerry Kraut captured the Masters Series win. In addition to the two podium finishers, Alex Ardoin and Caio Lara added vital championship points with fifth and eighth place results. Newly crowned F2000 Championship Series champion Chris Miller's inaugural Star Mazda race ended prior to the green flag being waved.
As part of the renowned Petit Le Mans event, the JDC MotorSports drivers got their first chance to sample the high-speed Road Atlanta road course on Tuesday (September 22) via a pair of promoters test day sessions. Battling low grip levels following heavy rain showers the day before, and some minor technical problems, all five drivers struggled to show their true speed. When the checkered flag waved following the afternoon session, Lara's No. 19 MLD/ATW/Molecule/Red Line Oil/JDC MotorSports car led the five-car contingent in eighth place, just ahead of Ardoin in ninth, Christodoulou in 11th, Kraut in 13th and Miller in 15th.
Returning to Road Atlanta one day later, the JDC drivers continued to search for the ideal balance on the 2.5-mile road course in the lone practice session of the day. The end result was Christodoulou's No. 11 Miller Milling/ Molecule/Red Line Oil/JDC MotorSports in sixth, followed by Lara in ninth, Ardoin in 10th, Miller in 14th and Kraut in 15th.
Qualifying for Round 12 at Road Atlanta took place on Thursday afternoon (September 24), following a final morning practice session. In what was a shortened session due to a cleanup for an oil spill, Christodoulou once again led the JDC contingent with the sixth fastest time. Right behind the championship contender on the speedcharts, Ardoin, piloting the No. 51 Oral & Facial Surgery Center/Red Line Oil/JDC MotorSports entry, and Lara earned row four starting positions, with the seventh and eighth fastest times. Miller qualified 15th for his first-ever Star Mazda race, while Kraut secured the Masters pole position with the 16th best time in the session.
Returning to the cockpits of the JDC MotorSports steeds, all five drivers were looking forward to advancing up the charts during the late afternoon Friday race. For Miller unfortunately that opportunity never came, as he retired without even turning lap, when his No. 85 Miller Miller/Red Line Oil/ JDC Motorsports entry overheated on the starting grid. When the 33-lap race did get underway, both Christodoulou and Ardoin proved to be drivers on the move. Advancing into the top-five, the duo battled not only one another but other drivers for position. Not far behind, Lara held station in eighth, ahead of Masters leader Kraut in 16th. As is common place at Road Atlanta, due to the draft down the long back straight, the final order was only determined by the waving of the checkered flag. Christodoulou, remaining in contention for the series title, scored his eighth podium finish of the year, crossing the start/finish in third place. Ardoin and Lara added two more top-10 results, finishing five and eighth respectively, while Kraut captured his third Masters Series win of the season in the No. 55 Dougherty & Co./Dougherty Funding LLC/Red Line Oil/JDC MotorSports car, overcoming a first-lap spin and a drive-through penalty to finish 16th.
JDC MotorSports concludes its Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear campaign on October 10th, with Round 13 taking place at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Entering the season-finale in Northern California, Christodoulou lies second in the championship fight as the top rookie, 15 points behind the leader. In the Team Championship fight, JDC MotorSports leads by 19 points. JDC MotorSport's Michael Guasch, who did not take part in Round 12 at Road Atlanta, has already clinched the Masters Series title.
