JDC MOTORSPORTS ADDS TO STAR MAZDA POINTS TOTAL IN IOWA
Minnesota-based race team places two drivers inside the top-10 in Round Seven at the Iowa Speedway
MINNEAPOLIS, MN. (July 12, 2009) -- JDC MotorSports continued its march towards both the driver and team titles in the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear on Friday (July 10), with Round Seven contested at the Iowa Speedway. English rookie Adam Christodoulou led the four-car effort with a fifth place result on the high-speed oval and was joined by Brazilian Caio Lara in the top-10. Gustavo Linares enjoyed a strong result with an 11th place finish, while Alex Ardoin challenged for top honors before a crash ended his race prematurely.
The second oval in as many events for the JDC MotorSports Star Mazda drivers commenced in less than ideal conditions on Friday morning, as a brief but powerful rain storm ended the first practice session after just 20-minutes of action. Prior to the red flags being waved, Ardoin (No. 51 Oral & Facial Surgery Center/Red Line Oil/JDC MotorSports) showed he was set to challenge for top honors in the single-day event via the second fastest time in the shortened session. Christodoulou likewise indicated he was ready to be part of the mix at the front of the talented field, turning the 10th quickest time.
With the track drying out in time for the scheduled second practice session just after noon, the JDC drivers continued to make their presence known. Ardoin remained among the top-three with the third fastest time around the 7/8-mile oval, while Christodoulou (No. 11 Molecule/Red Line Oil/JDC MotorSports) advanced up to sixth on the speedcharts when the checkered flag flew. Unfortunately for both Linares and Lara the session proved a struggle, as neither driver was able to find the right balance on their cars in the session, ending 15th and 18th respectively on the timecharts.
With the combined practice times setting the order for single-car qualifying, the JDC foursome were back on-course under the afternoon sun looking for some fast times during their two-lap timed runs. In contention for a front-row starting position, Christodoulou and Ardoin just missed out when the session came to a close, finishing third and fourth respectively, locking up row two for the start of the 100-lap race. Behind the duo, Linares (No. 20 CanTV/Red Line Oil/JDC MotorSports) and Lara (No.19 MLD/ATW/Molecule/Red Line Oil/JDC MotorSports) continued to struggle, eventually earning 16th and 17th place on the starting grid.
Racing under the lights for the first time, the start of Round Seven proved uneventful for the JDC MotorSports drivers, with Christodoulou and Ardoin part of the lead pack, ahead of Linares and Lara, who were engaged in a multi-car fight for position. Just prior to the halfway point of the race, JDC MotorSports hopes at a win suffered a setback, when Ardoin was collected by another driver while making an outside lane pass, ending the Louisiana driver's race against the wall. Fortunately this proved to be the only incident involving the JDC drivers, with the remaining three race pilots running trouble-free to the checkered flag. Christodoulou, crossed the start/finish line in fifth place, earning more valuable points towards his pursuit of both the Rookie of the Year award and championship title. Lara, having switched to a back-up car, worked his way forward to ninth place, extending his top-10 streak to seven, while Linares just missed a top-10 result of his own, crossing the stripe in 11th. Ardoin was classified 15th in the final results.
JDC MotorSports resumes its pursuit of a second Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear title on July 25-26, with Rounds Eight and Nine at the Autobahn Country Club in Illinois.
