Bach & B-K Impressive in 2003 Star Mazda Series opener with front row qualifying spot.
(SEBRING, FLORIDA) Tuesday, March 18, 2003 -- Jamie Bach and the B-K Motorsports team had only raced at Sebring International Raceway on the full 12-Hour course one time before coming to the 2003 STAR MAZDA SERIES NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP season opener this past weekend. Those who witnessed any of the on-track sessions, however, might not have known the difference.
Bach and the B-K team, engineered by R Sport's Ron Roland, ran first or second in the time charts during each of the week's practice sessions and were very impressive during the events sole qualifying session Friday morning before the race. During qualifying, Bach and fellow Rookie-of-the-Year candidate Michael McDowell traded the top spot in the 33 car grid four times. Bach was the first to record the sessions fastest time and back and forth they went. It was not until the final lap of qualifying when Bach was edged out of the pole by a mere .15 seconds by eventual race winner, McDowell. Bach was under the existing track record by .3 seconds.
At the start of the race, Bach settled into third place and diced with series veteran Mike Potekhan. For the first ten laps of the sixteen lap event, Bach shadowed Potekhan at every corner. At the start of lap eleven, however, Bach was chasing Potekhan into Sebring's famous turn one when a lower suspension control arm snapped on the B-K entry, sending Bach off course. After a slow lap back to the pits, the race ended for the B-K team just a few laps short of a what appeared to be a likely podium finish. This was the first event in 35 races where B-K experienced a mechanical failure, a statistic the team is quite proud to sport.
The next round of the STAR MAZDA SERIES will take the B-K team to the famous circuit at MAZDA RACEWAY at Laguna Seca during the Bridgestone presents the CHAMP CAR SERIES powered by FORD weekend June 13-15. All of the STAR MAZDA SERIES events will be televised on SPEED Channel. A broadcast schedule will be available shortly.

"We are very glad that we came down and showed some good speed this week. Qualifying was awesome and we were just a few ticks away from taking that pole and that means a great deal in our first event of 2003. Obviously, we wish the results in the race would have been different, but after 35 races without a mechanical failure, we should feel very lucky. I really like the track here. It has a ton of history behind it and we seemed to find a good line around here. I am really looking forward to getting some seat time at Mazda Raceway in preparation for the June event there. We come away from Sebring feeling confident that we can certainly run up front and we will be ready for the next race."
