David Ostella swings back into action this weekend as the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear resumes with Round 5 at Iowa Speedway. The second in a pair of oval races on the 2010 schedule, Ostella returns to the 7/8 mile tri-oval with fond podium memories from a year ago.
"It was the longest day of the season, that I remember for sure," Ostella said of the run last year that included two practice sessions, single-car qualifying and the inaugural Pizza Ranch 100 - all on the same day. "It was a little tiring having the schedule run in a single day and knowing you had to race just five hours after qualifying, but I was excited coming from qualifying and I knew we had a great car. I hope I can once again get back on the podium and really turn things around here for the rest of the year. School is over and now I can focus on racing and spending some time at Global Precast!"
Weather was the mitigating factor in scheduling last year, and this weekend the drivers will be set for two test sessions and Official Practice on Friday before noon qualifying and the second Pizza Ranch 100 beginning at 7:15 Saturday night. Ostella and his AIM Autosport team will be looking to get their Star Mazda chassis dialled in quickly, mindful of qualifying midday and racing at night.
"We've got to get up to speed right away and make fine-tuning adjustments as needed," Ostella said of the approach heading in. "I want to make sure we are in the top five of the time sheets, and just build from there. Iowa is a flat-out oval, with a lot more banking than we had at O'Reilly Raceway Park in our last race. Racing at night is just like racing in the daylight, but even better because everything is so clear. I think we have reason to be confident, and believe we can get a good points run and shoot for the podium once again."
The Star Mazda Championship is about to hit the meat of its order as after completing the second oval race this weekend, Ostella will head to New Jersey Motorsports Park next weekend for the first of two consecutive double-header weekends. Rounds five through seven will be covered in just nine days, and rounds eight and nine will take place at the end of July in a second double-header at Autobahn Chicago. Ostella will race in all with support from Global Precast Intercontinental, Alpinestars, Masters Insurance, Pro Green Demolition and RAW Integrated Ltd, the web hosts of davidostella.com
