Coleman Grabs Best Finish of Season at Road America
ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (August 21, 2004) -- G&W Motorsports driver Brad Coleman (Houston, Texas) picked up his best finish of the season in the Star Mazda Series race at Road America on Saturday. The 16-year-old rookie piloted the Podium No. 33 Pro Formula Mazda to an 11th-place finish in round seven of the Star Mazda Series North American Championship presented by Goodyear.
Both G&W Motorsports drivers had impressive qualifying runs on Saturday morning. Brian Frisselle (Kihei, Hawaii) put together 2:05.421 lap around the four-mile road course to qualify only 0.8 seconds behind the polesitter and secure the fifth starting position. Coleman also had a good qualifying with his 2:05.914 lap, which put him in eighth.
Frisselle was at the beginning of a great run in the Ventura Travel Services No. 15 Mazda, moving up to the fourth position and tracking down the leaders. But, on lap 10 he had contact with Luis Schiavo, which sent him off track in turn one and brought out a caution to free him from the gravel. Although the 19-year-old was able to return to the race, the incident took him off the lead lap, and he finished two laps down in 30th.
However, Coleman was able to shake his bad luck streak during the race. After a string of races that came to an end prematurely due to on-track incidents, Coleman was finally able to give the field a taste of what he's got with a clean race on Saturday. The young driver's performance improved throughout the race, with his best lap of 2:06.505 coming on the white flag en route to an 11th-place finish, only 23 seconds behind winner Michael McDowell.
Round eight of the Star Mazda Series North American Championship presented by Goodyear will be held at Road Atlanta as part of the Petit Le Mans weekend activities in September. Round seven from Road America will be televised on SPEED Channel on September 19 at 2 p.m. ET. For more information on the series visit www.starmazda.com.
