Tough Day for G&W Motorsports at Lime Rock
LAKEVILLE, Conn. (July 3, 2004) -- It was a tough day for G&W Motorsports in the Star Mazda Series North American Championship race at Lime Rock Park today. Both of the team's Pro Formula Mazdas had off-track incidents that kept them out of the running for the victory.
Marco Andretti (Nazareth, Pa.), son of Michael Andretti and grandson of Mario Andretti, made his Star Mazda Series debut for G&W Motorsports in the No. 15 car, subbing in for regular driver Brian Frisselle, who competed with the Formula BMW USA Series in Cleveland this weekend.
Andretti qualified in the 14th position but quickly worked his way through the field when the green flag fell. The 17-year-old racer had made his way up to lead pack of six when he made contact with Tom Nastasi on lap seven while battling for position in turn one.
The incident took both cars out of the race, which was especially disappointing for Andretti, who commented that he felt the No. 15 car was running perfect and could have easily had a shot at victory with the adjustments made by the G&W Motorsports team after qualifying.
The day was not that much kinder to Brad Coleman (Houston, Texas) in the team's No. 33 Mazda. The 16-year-old rookie spun off track during the race and had trouble getting the car started again. The spin and delayed return to the race resulted in Coleman finishing in 22nd place and five laps down to race winner Michael McDowell, who recently team with G&W Motorsports in the Rolex Sports Car Series at Watkins Glen International.
Round four of the Star Mazda Series North American Championship presented by Goodyear will be held with the American LeMans Series event at Infineon Raceway on July 15-17. The Lime Rock Park round of the championship will be broadcast by SPEED Channel on July 18 at 2 p.m. ET. For more information please visit www.starmazda.com.
G&W Motorsports, based at Virginia International Raceway in Alton, Va., made its debut into open-wheel racing this season at Sebring International Raceway. After accumulating numerous wins and championships in sports car racing, the team looks to continue its success in the Star Mazda Series with its pair of entries.
