G&W Motorsports Drivers Quick In Practice at Infineon
SONOMA, Calif. (July 16, 2004) -- Brian Frisselle (Kihei, Hawaii) turned the fastest lap time during the Star Mazda Series' morning practice session at Infineon Raceway on Friday. Frisselle clocked a 1:29.813 lap around the 1.949-mile road course at the wheel of the Ventura Travel Service No. 15 Pro Formula Mazda of G&W Motorsports.
During the two other practice sessions held on Friday, only three drivers were able to top Frisselle's opening session lap time, all within two tenths of a second of the rookie driver.
G&W Motorsports driver Brad Coleman (Houston, Texas) also put in his best performance to date during Friday's sessions. His quick lap of 1:30.725 in the Podium No. 33 Mazda also came during the morning practice session.
Nineteen-year-old Frisselle, son of renowned sports car driver Brad Frisselle, is working to follow in his father's footsteps. In only his third race ever, he took second place at Road America. Last season, he finished out the Formula Dodge National Championships with three-straight wins. The Star Mazda rookie is sponsored by Ventura Travel Services, Skip Barber Racing Series, Sparco and Axcel Fast Graphics.
At only 16 years old, Coleman is the youngest competitor in the Star Mazda Series. Despite his young age, he already has a lot of experience under his belt. He raced in the Fran-Am West Coast Championship last season and has competed in numerous karting races in three different classes.
The Star Mazda Series North American Championship presented by Goodyear, featuring open-wheel race cars adaptable to both oval tracks and road courses, is designed to develop new race driver talents. The series' joint appearances with prominent racing programs, coupled with SPEED Channel's television coverage, grant drivers the needed exposure to advance their driving careers.
The Star Mazda Series is part of the American Le Mans Series Infineon Grand Prix of Sonoma event weekend. Qualifying will be held at 8:35 a.m. PT on Saturday, with the 45-minute race getting underway at 3:20 p.m. PT.
G&W Motorsports, based at Virginia International Raceway in Alton, Va., made its debut into open-wheel racing this season at Sebring International Raceway. After accumulating numerous wins and championships in sports car racing, the team looks to continue its success in the Star Mazda Series with its pair of entries.
