Di Leo Increases Point Lead
"Scores another podium, five in a row!"
July 25, 2004 - Toronto, ON - 22-year-old Daniel Di Leo (Star Race Cars / Select Auto Collision / WTF Solutions / Autosports Media) scored another podium finish for the fifth consecutive time in the Star Mazda Series presented by Goodyear at Portland International Raceway in Portland, OR. After proving to be very fast during Thursday and Friday's test sessions, Di Leo managed to pace the car for the third starting position on the inside of row two.
By being the fastest during most of the official Friday sessions, Di Leo was a favorite for the pole, but a slight miss in the car set-up hindered his chances. "We went the wrong way on the set-up and the car wasn't right," explained Di Leo. "I had to really push hard to start third. We will fix it and hopefully take the victory."
When the green flag flew for the Saturday afternoon race, Di Leo was determined to add another victory to his already impressive resume. Already ahead by twenty markers in the championship, the talented Canadian battled with his contenders all race long.
The Markham, ON resident had an epic battle at the front of the pack battling with teammate Michael McDowell along with a few others for the second spot. "The race was very exciting. The top five were closely matched all weekend long and that proved to be exciting during each and every re-start." said Di Leo. "I was sitting in third behind McDowell when a full course caution came out. I had a really good run on him when the green flew, and at the same time I was under attack from the fourth place car. We went into the festival turn three wide, and luckily I came out ahead of the other two cars."
Over three seconds behind the leader, Di Leo began to close in steadily until the checkered flew. "I just ran out of time. The car came in towards the end of the race and a few more laps and things would have definitely been interesting." Di Leo has been the most consistent driver in the series as he has finished every series lap at all five events having scored five podiums.
Di Leo has increased his lead in the series championship points battle to 25 points as he looks towards the title in his rookie year. Di Leo and his Star Race Cars team will have a weekend off before heading to Daniel's home race at Mosport International Raceway. The series will finally head North of the border to Bowmanville, ON for the only Canadian stop in the championship.
