Daniel Di Leo Impresses Again at Lime Rock
A trio of podiums gives Di Leo the early championship point lead
July 5, 2004 -- Guelph, ON -- 22-year-old Daniel Di Leo (Star Race Cars, Select Auto Collision, WTF Solutions, Autosports Media) scored his third podium finish in as many races at this past weekends Pro Formula Mazda event at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, CT. Joining his teammate on the podium, Di Leo garnered the second position and an increase in the championship point lead.
The Markham, ON resident started the weekend in fine form out pacing his fellow competitors in early test sessions on Friday. Feeling confident heading into the qualifying session, Di Leo battled an ill handling car and changing track conditions to put his car on the inside of row two in the third position.
When the green flag flew for the start of the Saturday afternoon event, Di Leo and a fellow competitor touched wheels as they entered turn one. The talented Canadian was able to keep his car on track and in the second position. As the race wore on, Di Leo challenged the leader on several attempts but was unable to get to the checkers first. "I had a great battle with Michael and it was a great race," stated Di Leo. "I wish I could have taken the victory for my team but I am happy to get another podium and increase my championship point lead." On the podium Di Leo went on to thank his Star Race Cars team, parents and all of his sponsors.
After his third consecutive podium finish in as many races, Di Leo now holds a healthy gap in the overall championship point lead and the Rookie of the Year championship.
The Star Mazda North American Championship will have a weekend off as the series will travel to Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, CA for round four on July 17.
