Daly Collects Sixth Pole of 2010 Season, All Juncos Racing Drivers Produce Top-Nine Qualifying Results
Joliet, Ill., August 1, 2010 - In just three laps, the least amount of laps run by any driver in this morning's qualifying session, Conor Daly collected his sixth pole position of the 2010 Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear. With a fastest lap time of 2:10.580, Daly was just under four hundredths shy of surpassing former Juncos Racing driver Peter Dempsey's track record of 2:10.546. By winning another pole, the 18-year-old also gained another point for the driver's championship and will start this afternoon's race at Autobahn Country Club on the front row of the grid alongside Andersen Racing's Tristan Vautier.
"I'm really happy with the Juncos Racing car," said Daly. "It's been great the whole weekend, but it's especially great right now. I'm really excited for our race this afternoon. We did the least amount of laps on our tires out of everyone, so they will have good reliability and go a long way. I'm looking forward to a consistent and fast race today."
After almost a year of absence from racing due to college, Sean Burstyn quickly impressed everyone by delivering the fastest lap time in his qualifying group this morning in just three laps. Though 12 more drivers attempted to clock in faster lap times, Burstyn's lap time remained near the top, resulting in a sixth place starting position for the South Beach, Florida native in this afternoon's race.
"Even after spending a year in college at GWU, I wasn't surprised to discover that Juncos Racing yet again provided me with a fantastic car," said Burstyn. "Even though I didn't race yesterday because of my observation of the Sabbath, I was still able to keep right up there with the whole group that had an extra day of driving on this track. It's great to be racing alongside such talented and competitive drivers, and I'm sure as always Juncos Racing will give me a great car from green to checkered flag."
Tatiana Calderon has been showcasing her talent throughout the entire weekend, and this morning's qualifying was no exception. The 17-year-old turned out her best career qualifying result today with a starting position of seventh place. Calderon, who gained eight positions in yesterday's race, will go into this afternoon's event with the goal of achieving her first podium finish of 2010.
"I'm happy because this is my best starting position so far," said Calderon. "I'm confident that we have a really good car for the race. I started 12th in yesterday's race and raced up to cross the finish line in fourth position, so I think I can finish in the top-five positions today for sure."
Teammate Rusty Mitchell struggled yesterday with needing a new engine right before the race, coming into contact with another car near the start of race and running out of time during the race to work his way back up through the field. Today, however, Mitchell matched his best qualifying result with Juncos Racing of ninth position, the same result he produced at New Jersey Motorsports Park last month. The Texas native will start today's race on row five alongside Team Apex's Joao Horto.
"The guys gave me a great car," said Rusty. "I just wasn't able to get everything out of it that I could have in this morning's qualifying session. I'm looking forward to the race today because I know the car will be good. Hopefully, I can make up some positions at the beginning of the race because I know I have the speed to do so."
Round Nine of the 2010 Star Mazda Championship will commence at 2:00 p.m. CST today. The 45-minute event will be broadcast live on HDNet Television and live timing and scoring will be available through www.starmazda.com.
