Michael Leonard jnr Signs for Team Parker Racing to contest Porsche Carrera Cup GB
Michael Leonard jnr, will attempt to follow in the footsteps of fellow Irishman Damien Faulkner when he contests the Porsche Carrera Cup GB title in 2009, having signed with Team Parker Racing for the coming season which kicks off at Brands Hatch in Kent on the weekend of the 5th of April.
Faulkner won the Pro class in Porsche Carrera Cup GB in 2005 and 2006 also with Team Parker Racing and now Leonard, who hails from Naas in County Kildare, is stepping into the Pro-AM series to race in the 10 round, 20 race championship, which is once again one of the support races to the prestigious British Touring Car Championship (BTCC).
Leonard, the former Irish Fiat Punto Mark 1 champion, and a runner up in the Irish Dunlop Supercar Championship, won two rounds in the Pro-AM 2 Porsche Carrera Cup GB in 2008 (Oulton Park and Brands Hatch) and also took four wins in the Porsche GT Cup last season.
For 2009, the Irish driver will also join forces with Team Parker Racing, previous winners of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB and who clinched the prestigious teams' championship crown in 2008.
"Michael has made a seam-less transition into Porsche GT and Cup racing and is a proven winner. I think he has what it takes to win in the Pro-AM class in 2009" said Stuart Parker, principal of Team Parker Racing.
"The Porsche Carrera Cup GB cup class is a difficult one to win, but I'm sure that by linking up with the Team Parker Racing outfit, I can have a very successful season in 2009" said Leonard.
For the seventh consecutive season Porsche Carrera Cup GB will be a support category to the BTCC, as driver's race for glory in the famed German sports car manufacturer's machines.
There are three titles up for grabs: Pro, Pro-Am and Pro-Am2. In Pro and Pro-Am (the top two categories), and drivers will contest the series in Porsche's very latest-specification 911 GT3 Cup model that boasts some 420bhp.
The Porsche Carrera Cup GB features at all ten BTCC race meetings, with two rounds held on each weekend.
